kimmyh 0 Report Share Posted February 9, 2005 Just wanted to say hello to everyone and introduce myself. I am currently an activity director at a facility that has 70 residents. It's all mine, no assistant. I just recently earned my certification and have been on the job for 3 months. I love it! This is such a rewarding career. Everyone here should remember that you are a major part of these peoples lives, I feel blessed to be able to spend the time they have left with them, giving them the most enjoyable time I possible can. I recently had a resident (who had never been involved in anything) ask me if I would teach her how to read. I agreed and things are going great so far. In fact others have come to me with the same request so we are starting a literacy program. I am in the south so illiteracy in the elderly is regretfully an issue I have to face. Some of the other residents have pitched in to help on the weekends with flash cards. I am so glad that I am able to do this. Yes the job requires at home hours, out of pocket expense, emotional and physical stress, but it gives so much back. I believe Activity Directors are Angels in a world where no one else wants to be. It's so easy to forget about grandma in the nursing home, to be to busy to make a weekened visit or drop a card in the mail to wish them happy birthday. But the shining moment is when you have an alzheimers resident who never speaks, who never smiles, who wanders aimlessly down the halls daily.....sing a long with amazing grace when it is played for him. I would like to tell all of you to keep up the good work, keep smiling, you are touching lives and making a difference.
tishaja 0 Report Share Posted February 10, 2005 Hey everyone. I too wanted to introduce myself. My name is Tisha and I'm the AD for an active adult community in Chandler, AZ. I've been here for 5 years and I'm starting to run out of ideas. We have over 2,900 residents and we are a 1,631 home community. Is there anyone else out there who an active adult community AD? I'd love to talk to you and share ideas. If anyone has ideas for active, independent living adults, please let me know. I have a social committee of 10 wonderful residents that help me with events but I want to show them something new and exciting. Thanks, Tisha
