Resident of the Month

Recommended Posts

I was given the idea from a friend to do a "Resident of the Month" board and highlight the likes/dislikes of a different resident each month, along with their picture. Does anyone else do this and can you give me some specifics of things to put on the board? Also, my boss doesn't like the name and wants me to call it "Friend of the Month." I don't like that as much...but I don't know what's been done at other places. Can anyone help me? Thanks! :)

Hi,

We haven't started doing this yet at my work but we are planning to do so soon. Feature some of their childhood memories, some funny stories that they recall, or ask the family if the resident is lower functioning. It helps to add interest if you can borrow some old photos from the family. Put them in a glass shadowbox if you have access to one of those, so that they are protected. You can add some 3D items that appeal to the resident's interests. Like a baseball or a some fishing lures for a male, if he likes that sort of thing. Make it colorful with some nice background paper.

How about "This is your life" or "Getting to know You"..

I do not recomend a "Resident of the Month" it implies that they won an honor as the best of the month, and at least in my facility that would cause a lot of friction (bragging & fighting).

A getting to know you type board is a little better, just make sure they're signing a concent form. Pull the name out of a hat at resident council this way its not bias.

Thanks! I like your suggestions! Especially about the title!

Hi,

I did resident of the month at one time. I included favotie activities: birthplace, favorite food, month and day they were born, advice to the younger generation, favorite color. I asked the family to bring in photos of the residents to display.

Residents took pride in being on the bulletin board.

I don't think it would single one patient out above the rest if there were a procedure to choose who was featured. Just for example, someone from another department could draw a name each month so the patients would know it was randomly selected.

When we featured biographies, the families liked it very much. Also, save the information that was featured so the family can keep it, or if they don't have family keep the info in a scrapbook for the rest of your patients to read later on.

  • 4 months later...

Hi there,

I love the idea of spotlighting a resident each month, but these are the concerns I ran into that you have to be careful of. No matter how you pick the resident for a specific month someone is going to be hurt. In my case, I have 41 residents...which will take me 41 months to get to everyone! Family members were asking me all the time when their loved on was going to be featured. I hated feeling like I was picking one resident over another. I even asked staff to pick, and they felt the same way. SO! I decided to just do a little "Getting to Know You" section in the monthly newsletter that included all the residents who were having a birthday that month. Sounds great right? Well in the month of June I have nine residents born that month! On the other hand, none in November! HA! We all want our residents to shine because they deserve it, but we just have to keep in mind their feelings. The birthday way everyone is familiar with each other from reading about each other and that makes for some great table talk! I hope this helps!

At my community we don’t do a board we do a newsletter. In the newsletter, we do an article on an individual resident. The name “Resident of the month” it seems bias to be honest. Maybe what you can do is do an article like the one’s we do (male or female resident) then post them on your board.

well that does sound like great idea but getting to know you seems to sound better. so some ideas about that, how about

favorite color, food, memory

things they like to do

what did they do for a job

how much schooling did they get

how many siblings do they have

i did a activity like this when i first started working at my facility. i called it, getting to know more about you and me. i put all these questions on a big beach ball. and we sat in a circle. i would toss the ball to a resident and what ever question there hand was touching they had to answer. then they got to ask me any question they wanted. it worked really well. it keep them reminicising and exercising and having fun all at once!

good luck!

I have done a resident of the month. I put the photo, and if there is family I include them. I put a current photo and if family photos available add those to the board. Put a short biography about the resident. And it works well if you have some interesting tidbits about the residents. I have one that used to teach square dancing and actually danced at the Grand Ole Opry ! We also include thoughts the staff has about the resident, like the sweetest smile, best spirit, any positive attribute the staff can add.
