Activity Director At A Very New Facility-1 Yr Old

Hi everyone,

My name is Dawn. You can't believe how happy I am to have found this networking community. That is exactly what I need.

Anyway, I just accepted the part-time Activity Director position at the Assisted & Indepedent Living Facility for the Deaf & Deaf-Blinds (we have nearly 40 residents). It's the 2nd facility in the nation. Although, I was told not to label "facility", but rather a community, living or residence so I will try to keep this habit.

I have a question that I've been dying to ask... I've been admant to ask this to the director/assistant director. I feel that I am paid really, really low, and I am about to get MS degree in Health Systems Adm., concentrating in Senior Living Management. The wage that I am getting is equivalent to the minimum wage.

My real is question is... how much is the beginning wage of the salary for AD in general?? The beginning salary would be approximately $20k? The median wage is $30k? I would like to know your average annual salary is, in the beginning of your job as the AD? If you would like to e-mail me and let me know, please e-mail me at dawnboyer77@yahoo.com.

Thanks and looking forward to be part of this community!

Dawn

Welcome, Dawn!

AD wages vary across the nation. It all depends on whether you live on the west coast or the east coast (where wages are much higher to match the cost of living), or somewhere in the middle of the nation. A wage of 20+K/yr is a fair amount for an experienced AD in the middle of the nation. A starting wage for someone with no previous experience should be around the $7.00/hr area. It also depends upon whether you are fulltime or parttime; how much experience you have; your educational/professional training.

The truth is...no one can give you a definate answer because there are so many variables. But note this: Corporations tend to lean to the low side of the wage spectrum when hiring...especially if that person is parttime. Hang in there...it will get better. Especially if you're getting paid to do what you love to do.

I also have a site... http://www.theactivitydirectorsoffice.com which you may visit.

If you need a facility newsletter (for free), try my husband's site... http://www.newsletter-express.com.

Best wishes,

Linda Lucas, AD
