Hello, I just became the AD for a pretty big Retirement Home in California for the Independant Living, and I am completely new to the industry and the position. I do, however, have a knack and passion for Event and Party planning. I worked as an Event Coordinator for a DJ company for a few years, and coordinated all the music entertainment aspects of all kinds of events, and as a Lead Bartender for an Event Company. In addition, I am the one everyone calls to plan thier parties. Ive always wanted to get into Event Planning and now I've been given an awesome opportunity. I am even more excited to be working with the Elderly!! I LOVE IT!!

Anyways, I am very excited, and coming up with new and creative ways to keep my group entertained. I am hoping to utilize some of your ideas and past activities as well. I am also trying to come up with ways to encourage some of the retirees who just want to "relax" :D and do nothing, to come and participate and join in on the fun. Im even thinking about throwing myself and "Welcome Party," where I can share food, photos, and stories that represent myself to get to know the residents. Any other ideas to get started with an extra BANG!! lol

I would LOVE any and all unique ideas, advice, and resources anyone has to offer. I look forward to networking with all of you......:)p

Hi Eydie,

I'm also in CA (SoCal). How many residents do you have and are they all independent?

Best wishes to you. I have had a lot of learning experiences since becoming an AD, and some of the best continue to be from networking, so you are on the right track. We can all help eachother.

Hi maybe since your in Ca anyway try something I did with sand. I took some and put it into containers and added food coloring to color the sand. Then layered it in little bottles. Take a straw and push down through the layers and it makes a design. Add some shell then seal it with hot glue and you have a beautiful item they will be proud of.

Eydie,

My first question to you is there an activity assessment on all of your clients. If not there is your first problem. My best suggestion for an activity is my favorite which is Awesome Auction. Go out and buy stuff such as boxes of tissues, soft candy ( make sure to get some diet), picture farames, boxes of cards or stationary, packages of crackers, little purses, watches and gum. I always went to the local Dollar Store. Make big signs and hang them. Give each resident twenty five one dollar bills in play money. Pre count these and put a paper clip on each one. Then watch the fun start. Show the item for bid and start the bidding at one dollar. I've seen a box of tissues go for twenty five dollars. there's lots of laughs and some fun competition. If two people win on the same item then you pick a number between one and ten and the winner is the one closest. They have to give any unused money back. You can alsxo make auction bucks ($5) for a prize during Bingo. If you have any questions let me know. Hope this helps.
