The ones I have seen have all been really cute. I think all they did was gather things that the resident liked- hobbies, careers, pictures of grandchildren mixed with a special momento and arranged them all in a memory box that stood outside their door to their room.

Use bandanas or newspapers or something unique as a backdrop, then tack things to it and layer them to make an outstanding box. Hobby Lobby would be a great place to pick up inexpensive things such as wooden cutouts, stickers, scrapbook items, charms, special papers etc to get started. Also, look in magazines for ideas.

Here is a website that gives in detail the instructions on making a memory box to hang on a wall. If the link doesn't work, then go to www.google.com and under the images tab, type shadow boxes. It is on the second page. But there are lots of ideas out there! Good luck!

What you can do is it a basket in different colors and have the families get all the residents childhood to adult memories . like pictures, awardlife s,some of the fruit recipes.etc. Than you put them on a table and ask them some of their life history's to see if the remember or to help them remeber.

The best thing about a memory box is that it makes that resident a real person to the caregivers. I collect miniatures at yard sales and things that they may have used for hobbies. For one lady I used a divided box and in one section created a scene from the restaurant that she owned. Complete with her steak dinner that she missed so much, cut out of paper. Another lady was so proud of a pair of glass dutch shoes that her daddy gave her and we were afraid they were going to get broken or lost. We had to track them down several times. When we put them in a memory box then she had them on display all the time and could show them to people.

loved that website with the how to instructions. Thanx.

Our facility used to make shadow boxes after people died. They are way more effective while the person is living. It gives care givers and guests something to talk about with the resident.
