heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted April 18, 2008 ExxonMobile is coming to my facility during volunteer week on May 1st and they wanted to do a Prom-- 80's theme. I have a zero budget! They are buying food and music and everything we need except table centerpieces! I am sure I can come up with something-- i need about 18 of them, but I am just dry on ideas! The first (and only) one I have done so far is: Record bowl filled with styrofoam, a ruler coming out of the foam wrapped in white and black polka dotted ribbon. Topped with a styrofoam ball that is covered in a hot pink boa and mardigras beads hanging down in loops that are hot pink, purple and white. Also, in the bottom of the bowl, I have hot pink and purple fabric wrapped around a few cassette tapes. I would like to do something with a rubiks cube (i don't have one, so I would have to spend my own money on one), pac man, atari, fingerless gloves, ??? What else can I do that is cheap or free? I know you don't know what I have, but it is probably similar to what you have, so help me think, Please! Also for decorating the room, the only thing i can come up with is streamers, balloons and twinkle lights everywhere. Any other suggestions? Coming up with ideas on a shoestring budget! It really forces us to become even more creative! The 1980's? Wow, that brings back memories! That's when Madona's voice sounded like she was on hellium If you have access to a color computer maybe you could duplicate one side of a rubiks cube by making colored squares on the paper. Then you could print them out and paste them on boxes and make them look like a rubiks cube. Jelly bracelets were big then. Oriental Trading probably has them for almost nothing. You tie a buch of them together as garland. White and black or pink and black checked headband scarves were popular. Some place like A.C. Moore or Michaels or other craft store probably have them. Rayban sunglasses were popular. The dollar store usually has them too if you wanted to use some of them in centerpieces. You could make banners from cheap fabric and paint packman and other things on them with fabric pens and hang from the ceiling. Good luck! Elaine
heavenstar 0 Author Report Share Posted April 21, 2008 Thanks Elaine! And also thanks Karen for making responding to posts extra credit! lol I got really excited about all of this over the weekend and I decided to come up with themed tables. (I need about 15 tables) So far, I have a cassette tape table, rubiks cube, pac man, indiana jones, Where's The Beef, California Raisins, Madonna, Wrestling, sixteen candles/breakfast club, and an "Iv'e fallen and cant' get up" table. Even if the residents don't know or don't remember, the volunteers will and they will love it! Thanks again for your help!

You've got the Golden Girls, Family Ties, St. Elsewhere, Miami Vice, Three's Company, All in the Family, and Dallas to name a few. you know- The Golden Girls alone is enough for a table theme. Then there were Cabbage Patch Kids, Big Hair Bands, Neon Colors, Trivial Persuit, Spuds McKenzie, Designer Jeans, Jelly Shoes, Michael Jackson, break dancing, Hawaiian Shirts and Jams shorts, Flash dance, Smurfs, and friendship bracelets and friendship pins. (wow what a scary time....lol) Hope this gave you some ideas. Stacey (Proud HS graduate class of '85)
heavenstar 0 Author Report Share Posted April 24, 2008 Stacey, Thanks! I completely forgot about the Golden girls! I think what I am going to do is to print out pictures of them and stand them up inside a low basket with foam and put something around the bottom of the pictures. I will glue the pictures up so that they are standing. That will be a cute decoration. I have so many ideas now, that I have begun making themed tables-- i have 17 tables! Also, I found this great square box and I covered it in black construction paper and added the squares for a Rubik's Cube. It will be hanging in the center of the room as our "disco ball". It is going to look super! Thanks for all your help and I will post pictures when I get everything decorated! Angie Proud graduate of 1992! Guest Tinki Report Share Posted April 26, 2008 Hey Angie, I totally want to come out and see all these tables - please take pictures and show us!!! Karen
heavenstar 0 Author Report Share Posted April 29, 2008 Karen You can definitely come out to see it. It is Thursday at 2:00. Call me if you want. I will take pictures soon--- as soon as I paint the California Raisins-- they are going to be soooo cute. I will post them on here. This has been so much fun decorating and putting everything together. I did 15 tables for $5.00-- total! How awesome is that?!!! Plus, I did the rubik's cube that is going to hang from the ceiling for free too. Nobody can say anything about me being a pack rat and saving everything I come across anymore, because I have totally used everything I could find! I will also post pictures after the party! Thanks for everyone's help!

may16pag 0 Report Share Posted June 19, 2014 You can get small boxes and cover them to look like cubed boxes. Take and copy and enlarge pictures of the residents. Glue them to stand up in the boxes or baskets. Fill in with leaves or artificial grass. Place them at the table where they will set. Write something about the 80's and tag the boxes with it so they can read it.
