Burn Out

Funny, but I use this website!

I get burned out not from lack of ideas, but from lack of support to pull those ideas into motion! Staff involvement is so critical, and yet staff (floor staff and administration alike) think we've got Activities under control with our creative minds and a few volunteers! How much more successful we would be if ALL staff realized THEIR importance in the well being of their resident's lives, not just as nurses, but as friends and emotional supporters!

I used to have an administrator who, when seeing I was getting stressed or burned out, he would give me the rest of the day off with pay! He knew he couldn't function without me as AD, and didn't want to loose me!

Boy I miss him!

Hi Dawn!

Well,I have been an Activity Director for 20 years now and I can tell ya from experience that I have been "Burned- Out" many times, and what I like to do is either take a class or seminar on various topics,Alzheimers or Activity class, crafts course at my local college at night, a class at Micheals Crafts store or something like that.Or I network with the local Activities Directors at my local Associations.I feel refreshed at full of new ideas after doing these things.

Maybe this will help ya! :-)

Have fun! gina

I have been at my job for 4 yrs now and have for the first time experienced burn-out. This job took longer than my previous jobs working with kids, because I love this one so much. I went to my residents during a program meeting and begged them to give me a big job! I told them "Let's have a huge Party! With lots of planning and manual labor for me!!!" So next week, We are having a very early Volunteer Appreciation dinner with the Theme of the Oscars. Giving me something big to focus on brings in my creative side, gives me something to fill my days and is a different twist than my usual. Believe it or not, I am not that busy usually. My resident volunteers handle most of the activities, and I spend a lot of my time sitting in front of my computer or visiting with residents. Don't get me wrong, I love it and am not complaining, but it gets boring doing the same thing day after day.

Heavenstar, tell me more about your job! Where do you work? What type of facility? How many residents? Are you doing enough with your residents? Do you have documentation on all the resident volunteers?

I am jealous, but wondering where you work and if I can steal your job!!!!!!!!

Diana,

My job is super.... good luck trying to steal it (they say I am the best) ha ha ha. We have 380 residents ( all independent Living) No documentation on any resident. Because it is called a retirement facility and it isn't run by state, I don't have any rules to go by-- I can do whatever I want. My title is program service coordinator and offically, I am in charge of the computer center, and that is what I get paid for. The trips and parties are all bonus. I am not certified in anything (and don't have to be). I found this job in the newspaper after being burned out working with child sex offenders and child murderers for two years. Most of the residents either speak Russian or Chinese---so the hardest part of my job is trying to make trips and parties and other activities fun without using words! Ha! Because then we would have to have 2-3 translators-- and that would take forever. But there is never a dull moment. I almost never go up to a person's apartment, they come down to me, and the sick and hermits, I never see--- which is not very many. But I don't have to worry about them (the social worker does). Out of 380 residents, I have close to 100 volunteers who handle most everything ( I just schedule). And of course, if there is a problem, then they tattle on each other and I have to handle it. My job is in Houston, and there is another place that I am pretty sure is hiring--- much more money, huge budget, very rich residents (they pay $3000 month for a small apartment---IL) and you get to travel all over the world. email me if you are interested.
