Just letting out steam....

I am trying not to freak out! But let me air my concerns......

I spent a few weeks discussing my new opening for Activity Assistant in my building with a lady I knew. I hired her, it took her another week to actually get to work. Then after the first day, she had to take the next two days off (her sons were sick). Then, by her 3rd day of work, she said that she no longer could work at our facility. Valentine's Day was her 4th and last day at work.

I have waited YEARS to be allowed to have an assistant and it ended up being a bad hire. I am just frustrated!!!!!!

And I have been trying to get hold of another lady who was a good option, but she won't return my phone calls!

I am so overwhelmed!!!!!!!!!

Hey Diana.. Remember there is always tomarrow.. your hire could have been way worse.. at least it was over quickly compared to some that you dont find out how incapable they are till months later.

A good rule of thumb that always worked for me is... I always hired the Assistant that was incredibly busy in her life .. I always asked the questions that let me know that this person had so much going on that she could barely get any sleep... my dad always told me to always ask a busy person to help.. because they didnt get so busy by saying "NO".. and an person that never says no is the type of person that always made the best Assistant...

try posting your job in the Job board.. it on the top menu.. some of the jobs are getting plenty of views.. www.activitydrector.net/jobs

thanks.. Pennie ad out )

Pennie - that is so true! words to live by!

Diana - sorry to hear about your frustration - hiring the right person is a huge challenge! Be prepare to go through other people before you find the right assistant! The Activity Assistant is a rare breed! They have to want to help but not run the program! So you either get someone who is unhappy about not being the leader or someone who does not even care if they come to work! But if you are lucky you get that person who either wants to move up down the line and wants to learn, or content being the man behind the scenes, enjoying the residents!

Good luck and don't let yourself get so disappointed on your adventure of hiring the right person!

I've at my current position for 5 1/2 years. I finally have an awesome staff. It took a lot. I went through several Assistants before the ones I have now. Each one was always "the right one", then when the actually worked, it was a different story. Hang in there, you'll find her/him.
