act4life 0 Report Share Posted January 24, 2007 Try going to your boss and let her say something to the DON. This way it looks like it's comming from the E.D and it may make it better for you. We have that sometimes where I work and If needed let the family go to D.O.N and tell her what is going on. We have done that before, we have had a meeting with family so they can talk about how they feel and go over any problems they may be having. Do it just like a Resident council meeting and send a copy to all department heads so it can address. We have the D.O.N & the E.D talk with the family if need. I hope this helps
BartMan 0 Report Share Posted January 24, 2007 Hi Mary !! We also had some trouble with staff members a while back at my place. There is always going to be "Bad Apples" in any facility. I know where I work I am allowed to say something to another employee. Not only that but I also am allowed to write someone up. Check into that , okay? It would be a last resort of course , but if the D.O.N is talking to them like "dirt" and nothing is getting done that way , then try my way. I tell ya the staff around here get nervous when they see a Dept. Head carrying a pink piece of paper around. Hey , sometimes ya have to do that to get someones attention. And that write up goes directly into their personal file. Might sound harsh but when your busting your --- everyday to better the Residents Quality of Life you don't need others who will slow down that progress. Hope this helps , peace out , BartMan ) (It usually only takes one write up to solve the situation, at least with my experience) Hope this doesn't offend anyone...... Guest Tinki Report Share Posted January 24, 2007 I agree with you Bartman! Sometimes you have to take drastic measures for things to happen or change! First try communication and motivation and if that does not work you have to move on to discipline. The first facility I worked at the caregivers ran the whole building it was nuts! I had a caregiver chase me, the Dietary Manager and the LVN down the hall yelling at us! That situation happened due to a lack of discipline - there was no fear of the Department Heads, the care-giver thought they could get away with anything. That situation was not good for the residents! I think it is a disservice when a facility does not give the AD any power. The AD is the eyes and ears of a facility and they should be able to discipline. Karen

Pennie 26 Report Share Posted January 25, 2007 Hi Mary, Are the Dept Heads in charge on week-ends? Most of the facilities I have worked at the Dept. Heads rotated the week-end. The Dept head who was working that week-end was the person in charge, responsible for what goes on. Usually there is a person who is in charge for nursing staff on the week-end, she/he worked directly under the dept head in charge. Like Bartman said the person in charge had the power to write up/fire staff, not matter which dept they work in. I found that by working with the week-end person in charge of nursing staff usually was up against the same problem as you are. She/he is dealing with the same rude employees & finds the DON had to deal with. The thing I learned is the she/he (week-end person) has alot of power with the Admin. So I would speak with her/him & we worked together. Once we did this I saw a change in the week-end attuitudes & got more support from the DON. The admin I beleive had a talk with the DON & backed us up. Also like Bartman said have the family members speak up to. If they are only complaining to you then how does the Admin & other Dept heads know there really is a problem? e sure you ask them to fill out a complaint form that goes to the Admin &/or speak to them. If all of you stick together you will see a change which is so much better for the over all facility. You know the res. also have to see & hear this. They have a say about this problem as well. So encourtage them to speak out too. Hopefully this will be helpful to you. Pennie
