Birthday Parties

Does anyone have any creative ideas for the (dreaded!) monthly birthday party celelbration?? I would love to do something besides having ALL the residents in for cake & ice cream. I am new at this facility and this is what they have been doing. In the facility that I recently left, the activity Dept. alwats cooked a special meal and served it in the private dining room for the monthly birthday people. I really like this idea but at my current facility our budget is next to nothing...$100 minus $67 per month for the printing of the big wall calendars. So if anyone has an idea that is neat, different and CHEAP, please let me know! Thank you!!!

try to grt the dietary dept involved in the special meal of the month as well having cake and ice cream. Better yet get all your dept heads to make a cover dish for them that would help. The resident with a birthday that month ask them what they would like to have for a meal write it down on a peace of paper and have each dept head make that dish. :-P

You know, I just had a baby, and at the hospital they served me and my husband a special meal. What made it so great was that it was served with a nice tablecloth, pretty folded napkins and beautiful glassware. It could have been any old food, but the presentation was outstanding! In fact, before my husband knew the food was for us, he saw the food outside out room and thought "what ritzy person just had a baby?" then he found out it was ours - he was tickeled! So even if dietary can't help out, maybe you could learn a few napkin folding techniques and catch the tray before it hits the birthday person and I bet other staff would also get involved!

Good luck!

At one facility I worked at, we had a sponsor for each month. These sponsors came from women groups in the church. The group would book music, bring cake (sometimes they baked tons of cakes for us to have the left overs served throughout the month), and they would provide balloons and presents to the residents with birthdays that month. It worked out really well.

Where I am now, we have a monthly sing-a-long, (the words are on slides, so the residents don't have sheets they are messing with). We serve a "special" cake for those who have birthdays that month, and then everybody else gets regular cake. We have a head table for those celebrating their birthday decorated with a table cloth, balloons, and several centerpieces. The residents enjoy it. They are always anticipating what kind of cake they are going to get.

Then our dietary department provides a mini cake on they day of their birthday. The nursing staff, activity staff, and the residents sing happy birthday to them.

Remember, most of the residents appreciate the simple things. So, whatever is done, as long as it is presented well, they will enjoy it.
