Hello all,

I have been asked many times about the HIPAA reg and what it has to do with our profession. I put my article about HIPAA in the Article section. Please read it and give me your feedback. If you don't know me, I am an ADC in Georgia and I teach several classes for Activity Directors. So your feedback helps me.

My e-mail is on this site and you can also contact me on hotmail at : bigchris1974@hotmail.com

If you decide to reprint or use it, I do ask that you contact me first.

Thanks and have a good one.

Hi Chris,

Thanks for sharing your views on Hippa regs.

I do have a question for you.

I am going from 19 years in long term care experience to a large retirement community and all the residents are private pay(no insurance)only.

In your opinion do any Hippa rules apply here in this situation?

Thanks,gina :-D

Chris,

Thank you for the article!!!

I must admit, you were wordy in the beginning. I kinda lost track of why I was reading it. Most AD's are well versed in what HIIPA is, but question how it applies to them. The last part of the article was what sparked my interested because that is where my questions lay. Perhaps you could shorten the first part to something much more simple to understand.

But once again, thank you for the article!!!

Hi Chris,

I'm an activity director in a little place called Gray; have you ever heard of it? I don't use this site very often but I was browsing today & this question about HIPAA interested me and I just love bonus points, so here goes... To my knowledge HIPAA began originally to maintain the privacy of health info in the country b/c pharmacy co. were selling name and health info to other companies. It was also set up to streamline and standardize electronic claims. Am I anywhere close to being right? Let me know, Jess

Jessica,

Congradulations, you do get some bonus points. Your answer is partially right. As I mentioned in the article-HIPAA was created to regulate transferability of health information and to fight fraud. So you comment about standardizing claims is correct, but it is also there to provide a forum for every health care provider to transmit information privately and to protect the resident. +1 point.

On the pharmacy issue, you are in essence correct, however, pharmacy was only 1 piece to the puzzle. There are also DME providers, doctors, therapists, etc. who have defrauded the government. +1 point.

And to answer your first question, as a matter of fact I do know about Gray, GA. I know a wonderful person who lives there. Maybe you know them.

Thanks for your question, please let me know if you have more. And hug Gracie for me.

Chris
