karenleung 0 Report Share Posted May 24, 2004 Olympics is coming in August. I work at a nursing home with most of my residents in wheelchairs. I want to do a Special Olympics in July/August for my residents. Any suggestions on what games should I include in the event? :-)
Guest cindymaybe Report Share Posted May 24, 2004 We do a Summer olympics for our rsts. It goes all week and each day is has special games. At the end of the week we have a closing ceremony with cake medals and trophies. You can get the cheap medals and trophies through US Toy Caompany. We start the week off with an opening ceremony and the torch lighting. US also has olympic torches, flip the switch and a flake flame starts, our oldest rst lights the torch. We do this everyday before the games bigin and play the National Anthem and the Olympic Games anthem. All of our games are held outside, weather permitting, and at the end of the day we hand out the medals for the day. Each winning place in the games are given points. At the end of the week we hand out certificates to everyone who participated in the games and we tally up the points and give out first and second place trophies tothe overall athletes. If you would like I could fax you a copy of our games, the certificates and the point system. It's all very fun and everyone gets involved. We have special games so that everyone no matter how aware or handicapped they are they can participate. All of our staff help out with this event and at the closing ceremony we give a gift certificate to Wendy's to the staff memeber who helped out the most (a little incentive). This is a lot of fun and good PR if you can get the newspaper or local news to cover it. Good luck and let me know if you want a list of the games, there's too many to try typing them all out. Cindy ;-)

Valerie 0 Report Share Posted July 23, 2004 Hi Karen, We just finished our summer olympics and had a blast. We did pictionary, kick ball, ball toss, card games, yard darts, golf and bowling in the hall. I ordered a bowling ball that is light weight and they sat in a chair and threw the ball down the hall. Pictionary is a big hit with us. I pick the card and deside what they will draw on a white board. Yard darts was fun too. Some sat as they threw and you can adjust the distance easily. The golf was two different games. One who could hit the farthest and the other was who could make the mark with the least amount of hits. Wheelchairs didn't hold anyone back. Hope your games go good. karenleung 0 Author Report Share Posted July 24, 2004 Valerie, Thank you for sharing your event. My actiity staff members do not seem too into the idea of hosting the Olympic. We have four units with residents in different functioning levels. With Olympic approaching, I really want to do something with my residents, even in a smaller scale. Cindy has shared with me her games and score cards, and now with your success, I must put something together before Olympic begins. Thanks for sharing. =D
