kevinm 2 Report Share Posted May 20, 2004 I am not sure about the rest of the country, but here in Fla. our wonderful Gov. Bush signed a bill to reduce medicare payments by 5%. This has translated to almost a quarter mill. loss of revinue just for our bldg alone.(115) The corporate muckidy mucks decided to make up for this loss by cutting the Activity Asst. positions in all Bldgs owned by Age Institute(also connected with Extendicare) as well as all maint assist. and other internal positions. Has anyone else have this happen to you? On an upnote to all of this, Nsg has come to bat over this and I now have 2-3 CNA's assigned to activities daily for all main activities. Even my 2 evening programs are now being run by the CNA's. It's just bingo, but at least it's getting done till I can get some summer volunteers to help as well. It certainly is not an easy transition, especially with CNA's here in a union. I have had many that are bitching about it, but the DON is adamant that this is now their job. I have been thanking/praising them, giving them goodies, scratch off tickets etc. Hoping that this will cool their heels a bit. It has been helping some. I hope this is not a trend, and if it has not happend to you, I sure hope it does not happen to you or to your residents. Kevin
Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted May 20, 2004 Hi Kevin, Guess that is why I can't find a AA job in W.Palm Beach area. CNA doing activities? Isn't that like a Doctor doing nursing? I ,and this is just my opinion, think that a CNA shouldn't be doing both positions. Where I use to work we had a CNA doing activities but she never did CNA duties outside the activities room. She cut nails etc and was on duty just in case "something" happend. At least we had medical coverage of some sort. The other 3 people were not CNA's and had no medical background. I think this is crossing over the line into uncharted terriorty as far as I am concerned. Wonder if this is done in other parts of Florida. I have heard of it in other states. I wouldn't like it if a CNA did my job as an AA or AD. I do not think Nursing staff wouldn't like it if an AD or AA did their job. midgey 0 Report Share Posted May 21, 2004 :-( No wonder I can't find an AA position!!! I moved here 2 months ago and have not been very successful. I applied for one AA job, but they wanted only 20 hrs. a week and the pay was lousy. I am a CNA, but didn't do CNA duties in my old job up North. But now I'm working in Home Health and will continue to do so until an AA position comes along. I miss activities!
Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted May 21, 2004 Hi Midgey - This is another hot topic I'm sure with AA's, AD's and CNA's. I found a volunteer position but they wanted you to "work" 4 hours per day 5 days a week. I would love to do that but 5 days a week as a volunteer AA? Not too sure about that. Hope you get a job soon. Pat 8-)
