Hello All!

A member inquired about Oktoberfest today and if we had any information on it. Unfortunately, I did not so, I was wondering if anybody had any input on this holiday. Activity ideas, party ideas, recipes, etc. would be great! What do you do at your facilty to celebrate? Look forward to your responses!

Thanx Pennie

Here is a web page that has info, dates, & hx. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktoberfest At the facility that I previously worked at, (small community) we held a community wide Octoberfest. We invited the community to bring their apples and jars and a volunteer with an old fashioned apple press made cider. We decorated with bales of hay, scarecrows, and harvest produce. The fest included a farmer's market, craft bazaar, live music, & wool spinning. The residents raffled off a beatuiful "flowers of the states" quilt that was hand embroidered by; staff, volunteers, residents, and family members and then hand quilted by same. The fest became so large that it took up the front and side lawns of the hospital. The residents received 10% of all proceeds. We didn't exactly follow a German theme but allowed the community to recreate the fest into their own fashion. It was a big undertaking but very worth it.

Since this holiday is a german holiday -

Have a party with Polka music

Eat pretzels, gingerbread cookies, knockwurst - any german foods!

Read the Brothers Grimm Stories - they are the most famous German storytellers!

Hope this helps,

Karen

Hello All...

This is my first time posting. I really enjoy reading all of the great ideas on this site. It certainly makes planning new activities a easier.

I coordinate with our chef to make a typical German meal (knock wurst, kraut, hot German potato salad) at lunchtime. We serve apple kuchen (cake) or strudel for dessert. For an appetizer, I serve hot pretzels with mustard and a choice of "near beer" or apple cider. I decorate the dining rooms to look like a festive German beer hall with streamers and Oktoberfest cutouts that can be purchased at a local party store or through Oriental Traders. I set the tables with colorful table cloths and napkins. The colorful centerpieces are glass beer mugs filled with fresh cut flowers. The mugs can be purchased at the $ Store. I play German music to add to the festive party mood. To keep the festivities going into the afternoon, I hire a local accordion player to entertain the residents with polka music.

Another activity that can be added to the week's festivities is making pumpkin bread if you do cooking activities. I've also serve sliced apples with carmel dipping sauce for a snack sometime that week. Since I have only 26 residents, I buy the carmel sauce, but there are recipes on line to make homemade sauce.

Enjoy!
