heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted April 28, 2004 Ok, I have a great problem! 100 high school kids will come and do community service on one day in July. I have 380 residents. What can they all do? My residents are IL and I will probably only get 30 people to show up for an event. So I would like something different. It was suggested to me that the kids go to each apartment and clean the top of thier refrigerator or their windows, but honestly, that is boring and I don't know anyone who would want to do that! That may also violate privacy issues, false accusations (or true accusations) that something was stolen or whatever,.....I don't know, HELP!!! I would love to have it all in a common room so that I can keep an eye on the kids and residents....can't trust many people these days... So how do you keep 100 high school kids busy at one time??? gina 2 Report Share Posted April 28, 2004 Hi Heavenstar :-) I just read your post and thought maybe you would try one of these ideas- Why don't you have a baseball game with the kids( If you have room outside). Divide the kids up and have them play a game of baseball outside and let the residents watch,and then after have a BBQ and do something easy like hotdogs. Or have a Talent show- divide your residents with groups of the kids and give them a half an hour to come up with something to do for the show.Then have them all do their thing and serve refreshments after. Or have a Spelling Bee - divide the residents up with the kids into two groups and have each group take a turn at a word,if they dont get the correct spelling then they are out.The last group with the most people in it wins.Have Fun! ;-) gina Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Anyway, put on some music and give that BBQ that Gina suggests a try. Have the teenagers do some dancing with the residents. Just becareful about the teen dancing because they don't dance like they did in the 50's! Have the residents show their stuff too, those that can dance or at least get up. Hope all works out for you. Stacy 0 Report Share Posted April 29, 2004 I have done a Senior Olympics. There were more kids than residents, but I buddied them up. If a resident needed more help, then they were paired up with 2 kids. Some of our residents were not able to participate in some of the events, but it didn't matter because the kids could. I don't know how long they will be there, but we had the kids all day. We started with an Opening Ceremony and held games in the morning and the afternoon, and ended with a closing ceremony. The games we played were Basketball Discus - used paper plates and measured the distant Target Toss Discus Soccer Shot Put Spelling "B" Checkers Tournament Javelin Throw - used straws and measured how far the wrapper blew (they had a blast) The residents signed up for the events they wanted to participate in, and practice was held throughout the month. We really built up the anticipation for this events. We made medals to give out, and every participant got a certificate (we mad on the computer) We served gatorade in between games, and had a BBQ for lunch. It turned out to be a great event. How long is your intergenerational group, how old are the children, how many seniors are involved, do you share a snack together, have they spent time together before? We have limited space and funds . Right now they just all pair of and play games and thats what they have done for ever I feel like I would like to do a variety of differant things.
