Guest Tinki Report Share Posted March 19, 2006 Hope this helps - I created this daily shedule for my Alzheimer's Program. I thought it was easier to build my monthly calendar from this. Plus, I posted this calendar next to the monthly calendar in case I wanted to devate from the original activity, but always stayed with the same activity domain. For example: if I had a specific Arts and Crafts activity down for the monthly activity at 11:00 and I decided to go with something else I stayed within the domain of A& C. Alzheimer’s Daily Schedule -- from www.activitydirector.com 8:00 ADL’s 8:30 Reality Orientation 9:00 Exercise 9:30 Cognitive Therapy/Discussion Group 10:00 Snack and Hydration Program 10:30 Sequencing/Sorting Activity 11:00 Arts & Crafts 12:00 Lunch 1:00 Sensory Stimulation Activity 1:30 Recreational/Physical Activity 2:00 Special Event/Club 3:00 Reminiscing Activity 4:00 Relaxation Activity 4:30 ADL’s 5:00 Dinner 6:00 Sensory Stimulation Activity

Guest Guest_Rhonda Report Share Posted May 30, 2006 Hi I would just like to say for your Alz. unit Cooking, Cooking, Cooking. Our unit really is into cooking. Making cookie dough, rolling it out and then let them use cookie cutters and they will have fun. Make sure you put down alot of flour first. They also seem to enjoy folding towels or rags. We also have memory boxes that they love to go through when we leave them out. Or you can have a group activity with the memory boxes. They also seem to enjoy cutting out pictures from books. Just make sure they are safty scisors. Now that its getting warmer we have a stand up garden outside for them. they really seem to enjoy that also. Hope this helps. Guest MSS Report Share Posted May 30, 2006 I have found that in our Alzheimer's Unit there are such varying degrees of the disease that you have to do some things with some, and with the others try something different. Currently our residents enjoy sing-a-long (gospel), Dancing, Cooking Class, stringing green beans, folding clothes, sorting decks of cards by the color on the back, take a egg carton and paint the inside of the container (each hole and different color) and have pom poms that correspond to that color - have residents match the colors. Anything outdoors.... try the book about Montessori based activities...it is good.
Guest Hillview Terrace Report Share Posted June 4, 2006 :-D Alzheimer's patients are tough to do activities for. One idea our gerontologist said some revert back to an earlier time. If a lady was a housewife then she may want to iron or fold. Have pretend items. One man was a dairy farmer and we rented a (fake) cow that you could milk. Melete 0 Report Share Posted June 4, 2006 hey there, you already have some wonderful suggestions here. Also i would like to add....sensory perception program. at present i do this once a week for the people who are realy beyond interactive activites. i have an array of perfumed hand creams, feathers, etc etc and use them to help with stimulation. Imagien my surpries when i shook a plastic egg with beads inside it and asked her what did it remind her of and she answered (children playing in Scotland)....this was amazing as she hardly ever talks at all...*S*..i give them the choice of perfumes to wear for the day and for the ones who are not able to articualate their preferance i go by facial expression..it is a natural response...liek it or loathe it. also use bubbles..they love them.. for the afternoons i have Harmony Relaxation Hour. this consists of monday - massage tues- poetry wed-footspas thurs-proverbs friday- reading .. all subject to change. some light quiet type music to play at the end..amazing grace etc.....and then some lovely softer type music is played till dinner time. i find this routine and consistency works well. not as many beviour problems of an afternoon with them. be innovative and creative....the people in the Unit in my experience are easier to work with in many ways. As they are open to being creative...will dance sing laugh and express themselves in many ways the others without this illness wont'. it is about US stepping itnto their world and meeting them half way. i love the egg carton painting idea Rohnda has suggested and i am going to give that a go. also another to think about is a box full of christmas cards etc...toss them on the table..whine how you ahve to sort them all out and you don't have much time etc...i bet you will have a few volunteers within seconds....some will sort their size..colour..and others will read them which will become and activity intself...Oh and another...one particular group i worked with loved solving people problems..you know the wife who wants to leave the husband..should she..?? shouldn't she..?? what abotu the kids etc....etc......i get them out of the magazines...*S*..enjoy!! Pickles 0 Report Share Posted April 21, 2009 I work in an Adult Day Program, 99% of our participants have Alzheimer's or other dementia. In planning for day to day activities, I do an assessment with family members before the participant begins our program in order to find out the participants' present and past interests and abilities. After learning about the participant, I write a plan of care for each and develop the daily calendar according their interests and levels of abilities. The program routinely goes very smoothly because activities were designed with particular participants in mind. There are times when acitivities don't work the way we planned, and some times activites work better. If we fail we smile and ask forgiveness, that's the beauty of working with folks who have Alzheimer's. Good luck with your new day program! pickles
vickie81092 0 Report Share Posted October 19, 2009 I need ideas for Alzheimers particpiants. My job plans to open an Alzheimers/Dementia Day center. I need help on how to plan day to day activites. We do one thing at our facility that the dementia residents can participate in and that is what we call helping hands. Our resident fold the clothing protectors, hand towels and wash cloths for the facility. Usually dementia patients can remember things they did on a day to day basis and this is something everyone has done at one time or another folding cloths. We also have a basket of mis matched colored socks that our dementia residents enjoy sorting through to find the matches. Vickie
shirlee 0 Report Share Posted February 4, 2010 One of our resident’s favorite activities was after dinner. Several nights a week we would gather and do a large sized laminated reusable crossword which I taped to the wall. Many residents had done crosswords most of their life. We solved the puzzle as a group. Many residents simply enjoyed watching. I served decaf coffee. What was impossible to do alone was successful as a group. I will always remember the pride and sense of accomplishment our residents walked away with after knocking out a puzzle.

For example on Monday 9 am it will be coffee and juice time, 10 it will be current events ect... What activites do others do at their site??? Thank you!!!!! I'm not sure what stage of Dementia your participants are in, but I work in a memory care center for mild to moderate memory loss. I've found in my 2.5 years there that you can do a lot of the same activities that you would do with other seniors, but you have to remove a few steps. For example, we have the game Loaded Questions and we just play with the cards, not the board. Many of them also like things like personality tests. I only do short and simple ones such as the one found on this website (http://drawahouse.com/TakeTheTest/) where seniors draw a house. There are some that can not use writing utensils at their stage of memory loss, so a staff member/volunteer will do the work for them and include what the senior says to include. Based on what they include in the drawing, it says certain things about their personality. I only highlight the positive traits as that is important when working with dementia patients. I mentioned this in another topic, but I led a Vegas-themed mystery where staff acted and seniors guessed who the thief was. I can share this with you if you are interested. The seniors loved it and got really into it! Music can be a great reminiscing tool, so we play games like "Name that Tune" where we only play part of a song and they have to guess it. Many are very good at this! I hope these ideas help. I can provide more if needed.
