Activity Director's Horror Stories

I used to do a auction each month with the bingo bucks, in a assisted living. A couple of residents would really start getting bitchy about what I bought for the Auction. I bought the usual- trinkets, candy, sugar free stuff, paper items etc. One of my residents was never happy about what was up there - she would ask for paper items and I would by those and she would complain that weren't enough sugar free stuff. I would by more sugar free stuff and she would complain there weren't paper items.

It started to work my nerves and I would get anxiety about the auction. We were having the auction and I had gotten really work up about it, and that resident started to complain. I started CRYING! I thought -How embarassing - what am in 3rd grade I can't take a little criticism. I just could not stop crying- it just broke my heart that I could not please these people. Well needless to say I grew up a bit and thicken my skin.

But the sweetest thing happened out of that situation. I had this resident Mr. C - we were tight. He got a card for me and had everyone of the residents sign it. It said that Karen, we love you and your are doing a wonderful job. That reminded me of why I became an AD.

Hi, Karen!

In one of my early facilities I decided to create "Bingo Bucks". When a resident won at Bingo they received a Bingo Buck. I had prizes that were of different values. The residents could save their bucks and trade them in for bigger prizes...if they wanted. It was a great idea (and it works to this day).

Problem: I made the bucks by running a series of dollar bills through the copier on colored paper. They didn't look a thing like the real ones...except for the image on one side. However...

When the pop man came in to fill the Coke machine he found it full of...you guessed it...Bingo Bucks. The dollar bill scanner in the Coke machine recognized the bingo money as real currency. The residents were putting in their Bingo Bucks...getting a Coke for fifty cents...getting fifty cents in change...then buying a candy bar. It was a horror story for me (The repayment impacted my budget for the month). After that we started using Monopoly money.

The residents are a lot sharper than we all think!

Best wishes,

That is a good one Linda! One of my 96 year old resident would always come on outings to the store with us just to get out. She was so cute - she would alway ask me "Will the store cash my check"? She would be looking at a bingo buck and she would be serious. It was so cute!

At my very first nursing home job, fresh out of college, one of our senior rec staff members was out sick, He used to put in a weekly adult video for a gentleman resident in his room, but do to his disability he could not use the VCR himself, since he was out sick I had to go in and put on this adult tape for this man, I was so embarassed, but was reminded it was a resident right, and

although morally I do not agree with adult videos, I did it.

The rest of the day I felt so awful! I remember going home and talking to my mom about my new job, and when she asked me what did I do at work today, I mumbled what I did, she was laughing so hard and thought it was a riot!

Thankfully I never was put in that position again!!!!!!
