Guest cindymaybe Report Share Posted March 30, 2004 is anyone else using volunteers for feeding? If so what type of training program do you use?
Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted March 30, 2004 Hi Cindy, We had volunteers in the dining room, is that what you meant? If yes, then no there wasn't a training program whatsoever. They came in, helped out and that was that. Seems strange the the SNF didn't have something in place. Pat 8-)
gina 2 Report Share Posted March 30, 2004 Hi Cindy, Well, let me start by saying that if your facility is using volunteers for feeding your residents, i hope that they are properly trained. At one facility i worked at many years ago(back in the 80's) we had high school volunteers coming in after school to help feed the residents at dinner, anyway long story short, one of our residents started choking and the volunteers didnt know what to do,she started yelling and jumping around(which made things worse),luckily i was just walking by getting ready to go home, and saw this occur and helped out( the resident was fine).after this happened the D.O.N. started the feeding program training course, which was a class she gave to any new hire c.n.a.s,or volunteers.Basically, the program was a class to teach how to properly feed residents, and a teacher from the red cross to teach the heimlick/cpr class. gina :-)
Raven1029 0 Report Share Posted March 31, 2004 CMS has adopted the new paid feeding assistant program/rule for all nursing homes. Here is a link to some info (scroll way down) http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/05...42cfr483.35.htm
Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted March 31, 2004 Hi Gals, Thanks Raven for posting about feeding. I printed it out, it's a good thing to keep onhand. I'm starting a folder with items I find here or on the net itself. Do you have the website itself on Code of Federal Regulations? I would love to read it. Thanks for sharing. Stacy 0 Report Share Posted March 31, 2004 You know what I find wierd, they will train volunteers, but they won't let staff other than nursing feed the residents. To me that doesn't make sense. Wouldn't it be wise have the opportunity tor train other staff, such as activities, social services so that we would be able to feed? I just can't understand it. To me, it would make more sense to allow other staff first and then volunteers. Is it the same everywhere? Stacy
Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted March 31, 2004 Hi Stacy, I don't think I would want to do feedings as a AA (unemployed right now). I found that we had so much to do that it would be impossible to help out in the dining room also. We had CNA's do feedings. The volunteers weren't trained and one almost cost a man's life because he was on thickened liquids. She helped him reach for a glass of water. So training is very important but not for all staff. This is just my opinion. Pat 8-)
alwaysfun 0 Report Share Posted April 2, 2004 Hi,Pat8231....Stacey.....Raven1029.......Gina.......and Cindymaybe. I just caught your discussion about using volunteers to feed residents . At my facility it's only cnas that feed. They are trained for that. Sometimes when they have been working short I have volunteered to help them . I almost had to run for cover from the nursing staff. They are very touchy about it. Even in assisting a gentleman with his coffee they jumped down my throat.so I'm surprized to hear that anyplace would even consider a volunteer......I'm not sure what her title is but we have a "swallow'tech come in to train the cnas. I suppose she's a nurse. I'm finding this site so very interesting. There's everything from soup to nuts here...............I'm still looking for a project for National Nursing Home week. Any GREAT ideas? ....... :-P alwaysfun
Guest cindymaybe Report Share Posted April 7, 2004 Thank you everyone for trying to help me. The situations is this, here in the Upper Peninsula we have volunteer programs and all volunteers are trained by our inservice director on feeding. She trains them according to the CENA training program, which the state approved and ancouraged, now the state just sited a facility across the street for not having their volunteers trained enough (they too used the same training program). When they said they would re-train the volunteers the way the state wanted, state said no. No volunteers could feed without the set guidelines from the state. When the facility asked for the guidelines the state said there weren't any. Now call me silly, but if you tell me to fix something your way and only your way and I ask for the directions and you so there aren't any, how on earth can I fix it?
