Changes In The Work Place

Dear Activities Directors:

Your occupation is in for a big change.... Soon!

Reason: The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will soon announce major changes in the "Quality of Life" CMS regulation F-Tag 248. This is the regulation that outlines the requirements for approved activities in longterm care facilities. And it will have a profound impact on activities programming... and your profession, as well!

The biggest news is that the new regs will stress the requirement for getting therapeutic results from your activities. Plus, the CMS will emphasize that a main goal of activities will be to demonstrably improve the elders' quality of life in the longterm care setting. And they'll be very specific about the therapeutic value of each activity as it applies to specific diseases and conditions, and results will be expected! Not only that, but they'll even define types of equipment to be used in activities, as well.

That's where ElderCare Activities Guide can help you! Months ago, we anticipated these changes, and have positioned ElderCare Activities Guide to be your professional magazine for the new era of therapeutic and results-based of activities programming! Here's what we deliver in each issue:

*Ongoing articles and updates about these new regulations. This includes information directly from the regulators and other industry leaders about what they precisely mean for your activities programming!

*Stories and tips about what your fellow professionals are doing to successfully accommodate the new regulations in their own programming!

*Many well-organized pages of activities for your program that are therapeutically based, with scholarly references to back them up!

*A special section just on therapeutic activities for Alzheimer's residents... also with scholarly references to show that they're proven to be therapeutic!

ElderCare Activities Guide is your first source of information about the new regs, what they mean to you and your profession, and how to successfully implement them into a successful activities program at your facility!

*In future issues, we'll have articles on how your fellow professionals are adapting to the new regs, and the challenges... and opportunities...that they see ahead.

*Plus, as usual, we'll continue to provide you with our every-issue supply of therapeutically based activities, backed up by current research, which will help give you programming ideas that will satisfy the new CMS guidelines.

Start your subscription today, and you won't miss out on our exciting Sept/Oct issue, where we'll have our first major in-depth article about these new regs, and what they'll mean for your program... and your profession!

ElderCare Activities Guide

Be ready for the change!

Sincerely,

Bill,

Your posting sent me to the Draft Copy of the Interpretive Guidelines that have been proposed by CMS for activities. After reading the draft twice, I am unable to find the theraputic references. All of the interpretive guidelines refer to the current regulations and merely enhance what we have been doing all along. Most of the references in the Draft have to do with adapting a residents environment to meet their social needs and to assure that their needs and interests are included in their care plan. Thanks for making me go back and read the Draft.

Please check out this good summary of all the changes that will be happening

There are gonig to be several changes for some, and one of the major points i got from the draft copy was that every activity must have some therapuetic repercussions as well as improve the resident's quality of life. There are going to be requirements for this as well as equipment for each individual's needs. Thats going to take a large part of our budget and we need to be prepared and start looking for how to implement these changes the cheapest way possible.

Guest wondering

Just wondering, if this comes into play, does this mean F2 is a re-imburseable and will be responsible.

Hi!

This is my taking on this subject...Apparently the CMS is going to toughen the guidelines for its nursing home surveyors relative to the therapeutic value of activities. It seems that it will require that most all activities will have be of therapeutic value.

Where do you get your activities that are therapeutic, that will

satisfy the new CMS guidelines? Also, will this require AD's who are

specially trained in geriatric therapeutics do you think? Where is all this

headed for this profession?

Any answers are appreciated!

Anna

Hi anna! As far as your activities question, ElderCare Activities Guide offers therapeutic activities, and i am not exactly sure on the other activity newsletters offered for this profession.

Also, for the profession...I am noticing from this website that many states are requiring a higher education or certification from NCAAP.....though i am not sure as what requirement will happen in the future.

What do you guys think?

I think I would also keep in mind that activities must reflect a resident's interests and needs. What one person finds fulfilling and therapeutic, might have no affect on another. Everyone has different things that work for them- and we must get to know the resident to know what activities to plan. Simply offering an activity because it is shown in a book to be "correct" does not always make it right.
