Guest KathyH Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 Bill, Your posting sent me to the Draft Copy of the Interpretive Guidelines that have been proposed by CMS for activities. After reading the draft twice, I am unable to find the theraputic references. All of the interpretive guidelines refer to the current regulations and merely enhance what we have been doing all along. Most of the references in the Draft have to do with adapting a residents environment to meet their social needs and to assure that their needs and interests are included in their care plan. Guest jinxy Report Share Posted June 2, 2005 Please check out this good summary of all the changes that will be happening http://www.theactivitydirectorsoffice.com/DebbiesADTips.html There are gonig to be several changes for some, and one of the major points i got from the draft copy was that every activity must have some therapuetic repercussions as well as improve the resident's quality of life. There are going to be requirements for this as well as equipment for each individual's needs. Thats going to take a large part of our budget and we need to be prepared and start looking for how to implement these changes the cheapest way possible. This is my taking on this subject...Apparently the CMS is going to toughen the guidelines for its nursing home surveyors relative to the therapeutic value of activities. It seems that it will require that most all activities will have be of therapeutic value. Where do you get your activities that are therapeutic, that will satisfy the new CMS guidelines? Also, will this require AD's who are specially trained in geriatric therapeutics do you think? Where is all this headed for this profession? Any answers are appreciated! As far as your activities question, ElderCare Activities Guide offers therapeutic activities, and i am not exactly sure on the other activity newsletters offered for this profession. Also, for the profession...I am noticing from this website that many states are requiring a higher education or certification from NCAAP.....though i am not sure as what requirement will happen in the future. heatherla 0 Report Share Posted June 21, 2005 I think I would also keep in mind that activities must reflect a resident's interests and needs. What one person finds fulfilling and therapeutic, might have no affect on another. Everyone has different things that work for them- and we must get to know the resident to know what activities to plan.
