Workout 1 Report Share Posted October 31, 2013 Hi Folks I've been on this site and have found some good ideas here so I wanted to be a part of it. I NEED ASSISTANCE. I've been in my job for 7 months now. I am not an official activities director. I was a personal trainer working with seniors and my boss thought I would be a good fit for the job. Her feedback at this point is not positive for the most part. We have fun in the activities but apparently the environment throughout the day when an activity is not going on is blaah. I need to know how to make an exciting environment throughout the day. I know music is key so I have to talk to her about a system other than my computer because of course I need it throughout the day. My hours are not full time either which makes this difficult. I would appreciate any advice. Thank you and I'm really looking forward to being a par of this community.

jwh1962 0 Report Share Posted November 10, 2013 I am a FSD at a small 72 bed home in Peace Dale, Rhode Island. Because the activity department and food service do alot of functions together, I thought it would be good to have a deeper understading of the activities side so that I could deliver better services. Stefani 1 Report Share Posted November 21, 2013 Hello! My name is Stefani and I am finishing up MEPAP1. I have been in the activity department for two years and have been the activity director since August. I started as an STNA and worked the floor for six months before making the switch. Making the decision to apply for the activity assistant position after a short time working at the facility has been a great change. It has given me great opportunities and the chance to build better relationships with the residents. I was unsure of the change and enjoyed working as an aid, but luckily the activity director and other staff saw that I had something that would benefit the department. This was all completely new to me. This type of work was out of my comfort zone considering I had never even stepped foot in a nursing home. I am glad that I was able to flourish and broaden my horizons, as well as move up the ladder and make a career for myself. I can say that I no longer have a "job" but a career. I love going to work everyday and being the reason that the residents smile. For some, we are all they have. Looking back, I am grateful that I took the leap, made a completely crazy decision to become an STNA after working in a motorcycle dealership and getting laid off, because it has led me to where I am today. I am finishing up the MEPAP 1 class and am on these message boards for a requirement for the class. However I look forward to hopefully using this board as a tool to network and brainstorm with other Activity Professionals to hopefully come up with some fresh ideas! Joannem 0 Report Share Posted December 30, 2013 Hi all...My name is Joanne Mulligan and I just completed MEPAP1, and am starting MEPAPII Jan 7th. I am 58 and am transitioning from a career in Media Sales and Sales Mgmt. into the Senior Care field. I have been volunteering at Sippican Healthcare in Marion, and will be starting as a per diem employee in the Activity Dept as of the first of the Year. As I am new to the field, I am looking to share ideas and network. Anyone from eastern MA? Am looking to join a local AD group in the area. JoyTurnerVittone 0 Report Share Posted June 12, 2014 Hello everyone, My name is Joy Vittone. I am a new activity director and currently taking the MEPAP 1 course. I work at a SNF in Ashland, WI, since Sept 2013. I wish I had known about this career a long time ago. I used to work in the legal field and would have left it 10-15 years ago if I had known how fulfilling this "job" is. I feel like I am not really working because everything I get to do --- visiting with Residents, doing assessments and paperwork, and planning events and activities --- is what I would be doing in my free time by choice! I love it!!!! I am learning a lot from this site!
