Hi everyone, my name is Andrea and I graduated from Ohio State with my BA in speech and hearing science. I have been trying to get information on how to become an activities professional, but I am having a lot of difficulty. I have applied to nursing homes and rehab facilities to get some experience but I haven't had any luck in obtaining employment. Is it better to go on and get a masters in recreational therapy before trying to work in the field or do I just need certification in activities? Can someone please please help me? Thanks!

Hi.. visit this link to download a copy of the NCCAP Certification Standards for Activity Professionals also on the same page is the Surveyors Guide that will outline the Fed Tag f249 explaining what State and Fed Regulators are looking for when they visit a ElderCare facility

I would go ahead and get your masters. The more education you have behide you the better you are.

As an Administrator who spent 11 years in Activities, I would recommend that you contact other AD's in your area. Not all states require NCCAP cert although I think it is extremely important. And not all Nursing Homes have the budget to pay an AD with a Masters (you could probably work with a similar population and command a higher salary as a speech therapist) Good Luck!
