achskward 1 Report Share Posted February 11, 2009 Hey everyone. I am looking for ideas for our family council meetings. We would like to do something fun that gets our residents AND their families involved. Anything other than family day picnics?? Thanks in advance! Guest cindymaybe Report Share Posted February 11, 2009 We have some awesome family council meetings. We call them family nights (it gets more positvie attention from families, they think of it less as a meeting and more fun). Our residents put on a show for them. We have a karaoke system and they practice the songs they want to sing then every three months we have our "meeting" . The residents perform, we update them on anything new that's going on, the residents give them any big craft item thay've made especially for that night (right now we're making picture clocks-I used old CDs put a picture of the resident doing something fun or a family picture of them on it, sprayed it with lacquer, added the guts for a small clock (wal-mart has them for $5) and that's our craft this time), then we serve party snacks and mingle. Finding out if there are any concerns or suggestions. The families really respond to this. It's a huge turn out every time. We sent out surveys once andasked the families what they would prefer- a formal meeting with guest speakers, an informal meeting being open forum, or family nights with the residents. We also asked what night worked better for them. It came back almost unanimously to continue with family nights with the residents. Perhaps sending out a survey to families asking them what they want would help you. It works for us! Cindy

awalls1 0 Report Share Posted February 14, 2009 Maybe you could have Family members and Residents pick things they would like to do or share with each other, such as picture night( have residents and family members bring in pictures of things they enjoyed doing) easter egg hunts, dinners, family vacation pics something that involved the resident, Another Idea is have a craft night have the residents and family members make something together to bring for show and tell at one of the meetings (can get a lot of ideas for projects ) It can be something they have already made. Maybe a quilt or sewing night where the families bring in a quilt or something sewn that the resident has made. I hope I have been of some help
