Course Description:

The course is an 8 hour Continuing Education Course by the NCCDP that promote the skills and knowledge

of persons providing care to people with Alzheimer's and Dementia.

 

Course Objectives:

To provide education on the breakdown of Alzheimer's

and Dementias. To provide thorough information regarding the

physical care for person with Alzheimer's and Dementia through a

PowerPoint lecture presentation. To provide information on how to

communicate and deal with persons and families of people with

Alzheimer's and Dementia.

Instructor:

Karen Connelly, TRS/TXC, CDP is a Therapeutic

Recreation Specialist from Houston, Texas. Karen has 13 years

experience in Assisted Living Facilities, Long Term Care, Dementia Care,

Psychiatric, and recreation centers. She received a B.A. from Texas State

University in Recreation Administration with an emphasis in Therapeutic Recreation. Karen is an approved

instructor for the Consortium for Therapeutic Recreation and Activity

Professionals in Texas since 2000. She is also an approved instructor for the National Council for

Dementia Practitioners. Karen has created and presented many Continuing

Education workshops for Activity Directors in Texas and Online. She has been asked to

speak at many conferences including: Louisiana, New Mexico, Minnesota,

Illinois, Tennessee, South Carolina, Texas and for the National Association for

Activity Professionals. Karen is the co-creator and owner of the Activity

Directors Network an online resource for Activity Directors, teaches online

CEU's, and the Activity Director Courses for certification. She has authored

four books with Professional Printing & Publishing "Activity Director Guide

for Assisted Living", "Tons of Trivia and Word Games", "Successful Staff

Motivation" and "Activity Director Bible: Policies and Procedures"

 

 

Becoming a Certified Dementia Practitioner:

 

This Course will complete the requirements outlined by the National Council for Dementia Practitioners,

"These are the requirements of a comprehensive Alzheimer's and Dementia Seminar. At minimum,you must have completed an 8 hour comprehensive seminar, this can be an all day 8 hour seminar or a series of seminars. Either a one day comprehensive seminar or combined, the seminars must include the following list of topics. When you submit your application, you must attach a copy of each certificate that was provided to you when you attended the seminar. The Alzheimer's and Dementia seminar must be completed by a NCCDP approved instructor.

11:30-12:30 – Lunch – will be provided

 

12:30 -3:30 - Course Content

 

3:30-3:40- 10 Minute Break

 

3:40-5:00 – Course Content

 

5:00 – Course lecture over, Certificate Handout, Questions
