ILoveMyLVN 0 Report Share Posted September 13, 2008 Hi Everyone, I'm th AD at a new 6 month old ADHC facility where the patients want to go on outings. The challenge is that we only have a bus that will seat 4 people. (and no budget to pay for a larger one) There are about 20 patients there M-F, so whoever I don't take will likely feel left out. But they have been requesting an outing for 2 months of Resident Council, so I have to address it somehow. How do I choose who to take, and in what order? I am thinking I'd like to do something where they "earn" a trip out by doing certain things, or maybe they will win it. I'm not quite sure how to do this. Thanks for the input. ~GCL
shanna1977 0 Report Share Posted September 15, 2008 Hello, I am an activity aide taking classes to become Activity Director. I think if you could have a game or a scavenger hunt and break into teams and the team who wins can go on the outing first, or one night for dinner you could premark the dinner trays and who ever gets a sticker on there tray gets to go on the outing and next time take the others. Thanks, Shanna Hi Everyone, I'm th AD at a new 6 month old ADHC facility where the patients want to go on outings. The challenge is that we only have a bus that will seat 4 people. amcleod25 0 Report Share Posted September 16, 2008 Hi May I suggest a few options that have worked well for me. One you can post a sign up sheet with the location of where you are going so that the folks who are really interested in that trip will sign up, and you can take them in the order they sign up. Second you can keep a running list of who goes out and rotate through, so they will know they will have a turn to go. I find most people understand that it is impossilbe to take everyone out at once. Currently I send the first two trips out to go shopping, or out to eat etc, the last two trips of the month are van rides for the folks who can't manage being out in the community. I generally find if you do the scheduled weekly trips that it will generally make all happy. Good luck

mogreen 0 Report Share Posted September 16, 2008 1. Be honest with your residents. Tell them everyone won't be able to go every time, and how important it is that they work together so that everyone get a chance to go. 2. Have two outing a week until everyone get out at least once. 3.Have a sign up sheet first come first serve. 4 Let the residents selcet where they want to go the more choices you will have. 5.Have an outing inn ex. my residents love to go eat. So what I did was gather a few menus from places that they picked. I let them vote by a raise of hands. They select. Let the residents pick what they want, follow your system for getting resident's money. Call the order in ahead of time and go pick it up.I did this and it went over very well. I hope this works I'v done KFC, Red Lobster and Pizza Hut.
ILoveMyLVN 0 Author Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 (edited) Thank you Shanna, AMcleod and Mogreen for your input. I will try those tips! What a great inspiration to have resources like the ADs, Assistants and others on this board. You are appreciated! Have you used an incentive program to help motivate them to "win" a special trip? keda 0 Report Share Posted September 19, 2008 Hi, I am in a similar situation. The way I have been doing it, they have to rotate. The first group of 4 cannot go on the next trip. Keep a log of who is going and keep rotating the residents. I hope that helps a little. If there is a better way, I am open to hearing it! I will try it. ILoveMyLVN 0 Author Report Share Posted September 20, 2008 (edited) Hi Keda, Do you put outings or community activities specifically in the resident's care plan? If so are there res. that it is more suitable for? For example, we're ADHC, so some of our patients who are asking for outings can and sometimes do take trips on their own using the bus....So my question is that do we even need to provide outings for those type of high level patients... Thanks for your input! Edited September 20, 2008 by ILoveMyLVN
heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted September 29, 2008 I would do a survey on outings. Then group them up with similar interests. You can list them in your newsletter or bulletin board for upcoming trips and who is going. Rotate until you have everyone on board. As far as high levels are concerned. I would not discriminate! I would take them also! They benefit from going on trips with their friends from the facility as well. Most of my residents are all high levels-- completely independent, so the ones that need more help must bring their own caregivers with them. I don't help them at all-- not even up the steps. I do a survey on trips with many ideas and topics listed and the residents check which ones they want to go on. We also have a program meeting every month to talk about what trips and entertainment and programs we will plan for the next month. The residents are involved in everything. Also, when planning for a new event, I won't plan it unless we have enough volunteers for the job. They must be willing to work it if they are going to suggest it-- or at least find friends and neighbors who will help. Good Luck! Let us know where you are going for the first trip!
