Resident Recognition

. A year long celebration for star residents !

Each week of the year recognizes one of your residents. Have their photo on the bulletin board and tell a little about them ( get information from the resident or family). Show how each one is special - maybe interesting background, job in the past, or something unique about the person. Then have the staff tells something about the resident that makes them special. Each week, you have a star resident. If necessary, if your facility is larger, have a star on each hall. I took photos of each resident and made this my border for the board. Then each week one of the stars are moved to the center of the board along with the written paper about the resident. A few residents did not have much if any family, so the staff was important in filling in special things about the resident

Hi all,

What a great idea! Yesterday, as I was taking a resident to her room, on her bed was a Certificate of Achievement from therapy, and she was so proud. It made me think about getting certificates, or designing some, to congratulate them on their accomplishments in activities. For instance, we had a Spelling Bee yesterday, we had some wonderful spellers. Why not put a card in their rooms that has "Spelling Bee Champion" or "Supper Speller".

Hi Sheila

I really like your board & weekly resident recognition.

A DON had told me years ago about how she took pictures of each resident & wrote a short story about thier life. Like what you are doing. Then she put this into a photo album & set the book on a podium in the sitting area. Family members would look/read book when they would visit. It was something for them to discuss during the visits plus it made all of the residents feel so proud. I know that I love to hear the residents share their stories & life with me, I think that other feel the same way.

You have already done the hard part by taking pictures & doing a story, now all you need is the book.

When I worked on the Alzheimer's Unit we did something very similiar. We called it 'THE CELEBRATION OF LIFE'. We posted a new resident bi-weekly on the board in the hall. We asked the families to write a biography for the resident and add pictures. It was wonderful! We got a chance to know the resident on a more personal level. Helene from MA
