Interviewing Potential Staff

What questions do you ask potential staff during an interview?

Why do you want this job? (Someone once told us they wanted the job because it would look good on their resume!)

What have you done or experienced in the past that could/will help you be a good __________.

At your last job, when you had a disagreement with a co-worker, how did you resolve the issue? (This question allows you to see if they believe in the chain of command)

I'd take them to an activity, I'd model how I interact with the residents and then I'd wait/watch to see if they engage any residents in conversation. (I've had people totally ignore the residents and I could see clear uneasiness being around seniors.)

What would prevent you from being a reliable employee? (This lets you find out about unreliable cars, illness' they have, babysitting problems, or on the other hand, they might tell you about a backup sitter and that they've had pefect attendance at other jobs.)

Hope this helps, Terry

Some questions you ask activity staff are:

When will they be able to work?

Why do they want to work at your facility with that population?

Do they play a musical instrument/ do crafts?

To see if they are an optimist or pessimist: Do you view a half of a glass of water half full or half empty?

What can they bring to the job?

Ask about past experiences, and why they want to work in long term care.

If you did mepap, did you use the book Essentials? Chapter 5 talks about this.

Good Luck, Stasia

-I would find out how long they have been in the field. This will show the amount of experience they have.

-I would like to know where they see themselves five years from now. This is important because in gives you a general idea how dedicated the person would be.

-I would have them tell me one of their weaknesses.

Will I recently hire a new assistant, and 1 thing that I found interesting is giving them 5 mins to write a song to any tune that explains what they will bring to the department. Than have them sing it to you. This will show how they work under pressure, how creative they are and how far they are willing to go to ensure residents have a great time. It is also a tool to see if they have talent. It works for and it is fun. Most people will do, but I did have 1 lady state that she judt could'nt do it and she got up and left.
