hello everyone,

well to start off with i need some advice on how to handle my asst. i am new to my facitlity i have only been there two weeks. i am the activity director and well my asst has been there for 10 years she first worked in the kitchen and then went to the activity department. already i am having trouble with her .. when i first got there i told her that if she needed anything to ask me we are there to help each other and far more importantly for the residents. i have a ton of meeting i have to go to in the mornings and she handles the activities while i am in the meeting. but they do the same things over and over again they don't do triva and or crosswords so i introduce them to her. Then i want to get the residents excited about exercising so i told my asst that i was going to buy an dance exersice tape.. She told me the residents don't like to exercise and said that if i bought the tape then i could try it on them first and if they liked it she would contuine it.. like she was the boss.. She disappears without telling me and takes long lunch breaks etc...its starting to get worse and i need some advice.

I feel for you I've got two of those. When I started I met with all my staff and told them there will be changes and they are required to do the scheduled programs, if they didn't like the programs or didn't think they would work they can tell me but I wouldn't just take their word for it, I'd walk them through the activity... if it worked when I lead the group it should work for them, so that stoped all the "residents don't like that activity" comments. The other thing I had to do is write them up, if they want to keep their job they usually get a kick start from that. My one activity assistant has been here for 15 years, she would get away with so much with the past directors so I had to show her it's not gonna work with me, it's been a long journey but some how she now make it to work on time everyday where in the past she came and left as she pleased.
