Activity Requirements

I'm a fairly new AD in Texas. I'm in a smallish facility (we average just under 30 residents most of the time). How many activities per day am I required to do by the state (I currently do 4/day). Also, does anyone know how many "evening" activities I'm required to do per week or month? I "think" evening starts at 5:00 but I could easily be wrong. I've been looking through all my paperwork and P&P manuals to find this and haven't yet.

Thanks for all your help :D

Hi .. Sara,, I dont believe there is any thing written in stone about your requirements.. 4 activities aday is ok, weekends should be 2 Sat and 2 Sunday.. one being church.. After hours should be 3 per week, one can be the Wed Church Social.. With 30 residents it will be a pretty tight knit family.. you should work towards some self directed activity, Moon (dominoes), Music Room .. piano or keyboard.. , Movie Night.. do a few fund raisers to get a Popcorn machine, Knitting club... Study their assessments, do some personal interviews.. find some past history, gather some favorite hobbies and make supplies available.. with 30 residents you should be able to have a pretty good group.. have fun

That is a good question! I am curious to know the answers myself. It's funny how that information is so hard to find, but it is so important. I am an AD in a 60 bed care center. What times do you do activities to fit four in? We do our main activities at 10:00am and 2:00pm with a coffee/juice and snack time before or after each one for a social time. We are only doing one evening activity once a week at 6:00, but a couple of weeks ago I did find a consultant report from several years ago where at least 2 evening programs were recommended to the previous AD. I have thought seriously about adding another evening activity but I think I may have problems with getting staff to do the activity. Our residents get ready for bed after supper if there is not an activity planned. There had never been evening activities offered before I took the position, but the residents seem to enjoy them.

I will assume that you all are talking about a SNF...the only requirement related to your question is that there is an ongoing program of activities that meets the needs and interests of your residents. I recommend doing a survey which is essentially what you are doing on a regular basis with your assesments. Ask your residents what time of day they enjoy activities and what activities they enjoy. Create your calendar around their responses, otherwise you could be tagged during state survey...don't forget...document, document, document, take credit for what you do!!
