Guest BT Report Share Posted November 1, 2006 I would like to know what you do for your sensory programs during the holidays to elicit holiday memories from your dementia residents. I know that the late stage dementia residents have the usual lotion, smells and textures, but as a small group program what types of things do you do? thanks
Guest Lo Report Share Posted November 3, 2006 Bread machine going, large pictures of Christmas images, Xmas props and Chacki on the dining room tables to view, hold, move around, and soft Xmas music playing ........rolls of wrapping paper,(maybe one of the more high functioning ones could wrap some "presents" such as books. Parallel programming is the way to go. Encourage opportunites for rummaging and sorting on table tops. Xmas Cards, large scented candles(unlit of course) to hold and sniff. bigchris 1 Report Share Posted November 4, 2006 A no fail program tool in my facility for the holidays is music and food. In many demntia residents, music never leaves and it provides comfort and joy (comfort and joy! ) to them. One of the things I do when my demntia folks get agitated is sing to them. I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but they have those lyrics ingrained in ther mind. THat, in connection with cookies, ham, spices, gingerbread, etc. is a great tool.
