Hello out there!

Just found this site today, too. I work in Sydney,Australia in a 38 bed

hostel & 12 bed dementia specific unit. I have worked as a Recreational Activities Officer, since 2000. I am studying towards a Diploma in Diversional Therapist & will complete this, by September. Your equivalent of

an RAO is an Activities Assistant & a Diversional Therapist would be an

Activities Director. I used to be a Primary School Teacher (5-12 year olds) &

loved teaching. But,I feel that working with the elderly is what I've enjoyed the

most! My experience as a teacher has helped me with this new career. I fell into this work, by being at the right place, at the right time. I thought that it would be easy/fun & not as heavy as teaching.......I was wrong!!! I thought that painting nails, overseeing Bingo games & having chats etc was the go.

But, I've learnt that, this is what volunteers did & we do the hard slog, (ie the hard work) although enjoyable, fun (& frustrating sometimes). The paperwork, the Policies/Procedures,OH&S,Infection Control,Government Regulations etc etc etc It's a wonder, that we have enough time to be with the Residents.

:-D I really, truly love what I do & the Residents in our care. I've rambled

long enough.....OOROO!! (ie Bye for now). Thanks for reading this.Karolyn.
