Guest Tiff Report Share Posted April 9, 2006 I am in an Assisted Living and Memory Care community...so we are not participating in Nursing Home week. I have found, no matter what you are celabrating, if you have a "theme" it is much easier. The ones mentioned above sound like a lot of fun. We can not get our staff motivated enough to get excited about celebrating these things....so it usually is just me and the residents and the daytime care staff that do most of the "helping" in activities. I take that back...there are a few on the afternoon shift that get involved and exited about it and the Dept heads try to get everyone fired up. Good luck, Tiff
Guest Guest_Pennie Report Share Posted April 10, 2006 Hi, Also remember that Nat'l Nursing Home Week is to bring the community into the home or at least make them aware of your facility. The Admission People may have events planned for this week so check with them on their plans & see if you incorprate your calendar programs to go along with theirs. I have done craft shows and garage sales during this week. Place flyers & ads in the local paper offering free booths/tables to the community as well as staff & residents to sell stuff. Be sure to tell them that the facility will do all of the PR & adversting to promote the event. You can also have a day care come in for a visit an dcall the local jr & hi schools to come in do something ex: play, sing, visit, decorate etc.. Send out inviations to the doctors, local hospitals to drop by on certain day & time for open house. Have the Mayor come out on the very first day & sign a proclamation & take a picture & place it in the newspaper ASAP Put in the paper prior to NNHW that your facility will be celebrating that week by having a week long theme of ??? and invite the community to stop by for a visit or to help out. Just a few ways to get the info. out there about your activity programs & teh facility.

Guest Sue Report Share Posted April 14, 2006 For those who are new, the key is to get all departments involved. I was new last year and did it all myself. It worked, but I was stressed to the max. This year, I have already told them that each department head is to take a day, plan it, get supplies, etc. I am looking forward to a much more enjoyable (for me) Nursing Home Week. So far, the administrator is doing a luau, marketing/social services is doing a balloon launch and intergenerational activity with school age children, dietary is doing Western Day with a cookout, ADON/MDS coordinator is doing an oldies but goodies music day. Maintenance/housekeeping hasn't committed yet, but I am planning to corner him today and "force" him to commit to a day. This isn't supposed to be just our department. If it was, it would be called Activity Department Week. Get everyone involved right from the start--force them to commit!
Guest Guest_sarah Report Share Posted April 19, 2006 I have to admit, I did not realize how big this event was until this week.....so I am trying to plan along with the admissions director. We are thinking of a "through the years" theme. Each day is a different decade/ We are going to incorporate a steak cook out, a mother's day tea, ice cream social, balloon launch, and different activities that would have been popular in those era's. Wish me luck. Next year Im definatley starting earlier than this!!!

I too tried to involve all depts so in our marketing meeting I passed out a week calendar showing what I had planned for Sunday and Monday that my dept would be handling then I asked each dept to take a day to be in charge of. After the dead silence that followed the DNS asked me what me and my assistant would be doing while everyone else was doing their day-I told her the usual 1:1 visits, small groups, sensory groups, mail call, resident shopping,MDS,care plans and activity planning. Then our marketing director graciously consented to plan half a day only if she did not have an admission come in. Everyone else just sat there looking at me like I had sprouted another head. So much for teamwork!
January08 0 Report Share Posted April 23, 2008 We are going to have different dept, sponsoring the activities for the week, AHCA theme is "Taking Center Stage" and that's what we decided to go with, we are kicking off the week with one of our residents 100th birthday party(ACtivity and Social sponsoring), nursing is doing a red-carpet(best dressed and worst dressed) activity, Maintenance is doing a cook-out, Housekeeping is doing a "build your own sundaes" and Dietary is doing a Talent show, we are getting all the supplies and prizes for all of the events, but we thought each dept. could spotlight their dept. with Residents particpating in all the activities, we also are having a stage with a power point presentation in the front on the t.v featuring our residents. PLease give me your feed back. 8-) What are we doing this coming Nursing Home Week? First of all, Sunday is Mothers’ Day so we are celebrating it with a hired entertainer followed by pinning flowers to every mother and snacks to be followed afterwards. We will have barbecue in the patio with residents. Nurses will have a fun BINGO and ice cream socials. On Wednesday, we are having a ceremony with an invited Minister to share an Inspirational Talk on "Ageless Love". This is the theme for the year. Thursday will be group games to include all residents with a cake and refreshments prepared by the Dietary Department. Friday, lunch and dinner for the night shift provided by Woodhaven, our facility pharmacy. We all look forward to this event and it sounds fun. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted April 26, 2008 Wow Singer, That is horrible - I always love that attitude that anything that is fun is for the activity department and the other departments have no responsibility. I think it is funny that Activity Directors are the planners, but also have to help in the dining room, give tours, etc... Guess we are just that good, we can do it all!
