Guest Pat8231 Report Share Posted February 24, 2006 Hi Karen, I started to read Mini-Mysteries by Hy COnrad. They are five minute mysteries you read then try to solve. Some liked it while others thought it was a waste but then again as they say, "you can't please everyone". There are several mini mystery books at amazon.com (found all mine there). These books get the residents to put their thinking caps on and it can be fun depending on your residents capabilities and interests. Have fun, Pat 8-)
hcornell 0 Report Share Posted February 25, 2006 We have read the "Dear Abbey" section of the newspaper, poetry for the seasons, Helen Steiner Rice, Edgar Allen Poe, and even the "Left Behind" series. There are always great short stories on the internet as well!
Pennie 26 Report Share Posted February 27, 2006 Hey, Reading your post about Chicken Soup for the Soul reminded me of a story. I put it on my calendar I didn't explain what it was, just made it a big mystery about this new up coming activity. Well I got busy & wasn't think about it being on the calendar that afternoon. Around 2 pm I started noticing residents going towards the dining room (this is where the activities took place) all carring a bowl or cup. I stopped a resident & ask her where she was going she said to activities. I said why the cup she said because they are serving chicken soup. Boy did I get a laugh & some disappointed residents. I love this kind of work it never gets dull & boring ;-) Pennie
hcornell 0 Report Share Posted March 1, 2006 Pennie, that is so funny. My residents did that once too. We had Chicken Soup Stories on the calendar, and some of the rehab patients said they'd listen to the stories but wanted the soup to be tomato instead! So, my staff bought a can of campbell's tomato soup the next day and served it to them for an evening snack and chat group! From now on when we have "Chicken Soup stories", we will serve the soup too. (Get's a better crowd!)
Guest Guest_oldsbag Report Share Posted March 4, 2006 I found a conversation starter game called chicken soup for the golden soul. I actually did serve Lipton's chicken noodle soup to go along with the chat. They thought it was great.....a homey atmosphere for sharing.
