Seeking clarification on ceritfication classes/pitfalls:
I am interested in a career change; have been working as a social worker in the developmental disabilites field. Prior to that I had about 5 years in activities, two as a director of an adult day center and 3 in long term care as an activities coordinator. Due to family needs (raising a disabled child and needing a family friendly schedule) I have alternating between senior care and developmental disabilities, but always in the helping professions.
Early in my career I was involved in researching as the certification process was developing. I have a general idea of how the ADC criteria developed. I was an early member of the Maryland Activity Coordinators Society (MACS).
Now I am looking to update my education and would like to take advantage of my activities background. It was years ago but my true passion.
What is the easiest (financially and logistically) way to navigate the various avenues for certification. I know I will need the certification course and understand it can be obtained for about $500. at community colleges, plus books, then an internship. There is also an online course mentioned on this site. Once I have paid for such a course, how does the practicum factor in? Having paid for the course, will I have help navigating the set up of the remaining requirements? Will it be up to me to google longterm places and figure out a site where I will need to volunteer for a practicum, or is there a sane process in place?
I currently work full-time as a social worker for a medicaid waiver non profit. I will carve out time for the course and practicum. I just do not want to be naive and pay for a course and end up having no road to certification after the final exam. I am also concerned about time and do not want to pursue more than is needed for certification. I am nervous about figuring out the steps to the practicum in my rural area. I do not want to waste time by duplicating efforts, Is there a process in place?
Also, what is the difference between the courses through this site and the advertised Home Study course? Are the other online courses a sham? The ones not on this site all have a disclaimer that says: "Fulfills the initial requirement to become Nationally Certified." The word intial scares me.
Sorry for the long post, I am really nervous at being naive despite my experience. The internet resources are awesome, wish I was aware or had access to these resources 15 years ago. I have joined AD informational groups and am reading on new developments. But it is now time to do it. Get certified.
I live near the Pa boarder and understand their certification requirements are broader than Maryland, I may need to start working in Pa while I take the course. I am locked out in Maryland. I am keeping my mind open to options.
