One of the activities that we offer is our Christmas Resident Sale. It is quite popular as it is the only place many residents can shop for friends and family members, and it benefits the resident Sunshine Fund. All the staff and many residents get involved, especially the resident council members. We usually have a 50/50 raffle and there are also a few other raffle items. Residents and staff collect donations and make items for the sale.
We start planning in September for the sale to take place the last week of November, and assign a committee of both staff and residents to monitor and list the collection of items and planning the event. Many of the resident’s families also participate, supplying many useful items to sell. We solicit donations from local craft stores, garden stores, and gift certificates to raffle off.
The supplies needed are tables, cash box with change, tickets for raffles, boxes, wrapping paper, tape, ribbon, and items to sell. We usually have a bake sale, items provided by the staff for those with a sweet tooth.
The committee has a meeting and are presented with tasks such as decoration choices, gathering of sale items, food sign-up list, etc. Activities are in charge of making several different things to sell and providing a wrapping table for purchased gifts.
For the handmade items that activities staff and residents make, we create Christmas cards, sun catchers, necklace and bracelet sets, and flower arrangements in vases.
Christmas card supplies:
Plain white stock paper and envelopes. Rubber stamps and block print stamps. Ink pads and block print ink Large piece of Plexiglas. Ink rollers. Glitter.
Residents choose what stamp and colors they want and aides help set them up by providing the blank cards, ink and stamp choices. The residents that cannot physically create the cards will pick the colors and stamps and have another resident or aide stamp them.
Jewelry making supplies:
Beading wire. Crystal beads. Assorted colored beads. Spacers, fillers and findings. Jewelry snips and pliers.
As above, residents choose what they want to craft and the aides assist in gathering their bead choices. For those who cannot create on their own, they will choose and others will assist.
Flower Vase supplies:
Vases. Ribbon. Dried and plastic flowers Marbles and sea glass. Dried moss.
Residents and activity aides craft the vases, with some needing assistance.
Once the day of the sale arrives, the activities staff and committee decorate the room, set up the raffle tables and items for sale. Residents and staff are assigned to raffle and sale tables and the wrapping table.
We have several different sessions and some residents can work independently on their projects.
This activity is so successful that we are planning a spring fling with sale of donated plants, homemade cards, jewelry and, of course, a bake sale and several raffle items we have already collected.
Many needs and interests are met with this cluster of activities. Socialization, arts and crafts production, buying family members and friend’s presents, participation, and relationships developed. The best part about this activity is that it incorporates many different meetings, workshops, and residents to reach the final goal. We also make quite a bit of money for our Sunshine Fund, which is used for resident’s needs and wants.
