I actually have just heard of the Montessori Based Approach this week at a conference. The speaker was Sherl Stanley a Manager of Recreation Therapy out of Ohio. The approach seemed wonderful & worth trying. This approach uses sequencing and primary colors to help the memory impaired resident to complete tasks that we often do for them. To learn more you can look up information on the Myers Research Institue of Cleveland in which they have studied the effectiveness of these approaches. There is also a book that can be purchased that can educate us on this approach. I am not sure of the title, but I'm sure that it can be easily found! This approach seems to be the "up & coming" idea because it prevents us as Activity Directors to just do the activity for them but the activities actually cause them to use the abilities that they still have.
