Social Groups

I recently started a group called Spinning Threads. My thought was to have residents socialize while working on their individual sewing, knitting, crocheting, etc. projects. I set us up to meet in an inviting room for one hour, once a week. My ladies love this group. One resident calls it her "Stitch & B***h" group. They chat about all sorts of things and it gets them out of their rooms and into a social setting.

Hope this idea helps someone else!

I love it. The problem I have is that I don't knit, crochet or sew. Do you? or do the residents do their projects and you just visit with them?

I have a group of ladies that are crocheting baby caps for the local hospitals--and they meet two times a month. They are pretty much organized and I don't do anything but make certain the activity room is available. I also pay for the yarn that is used for this activitiy. -- WrenHenry

We do the same thing-- only for adult cancer patients. Our residents love this group! In fact, when one of them gets their citizenship, they spend their money on yarn and donate it to the group. The community also donates yarn for the project as well. When we did baby caps and booties for the hospital, the hospital would donate the yarn.

  • 2 months later...

I just started a new group with one of my summer junior volunteers leading. She is working with a group of ladies and a man or two making sculpey clay beads and making necklaces and bracelets. Our residents will make some for themselves and be able to sell some at our Fall Bazaar. They love working with her and dont even realize the therapeutic and social benefits they are getting in the process.
