achskward 1 Report Share Posted March 27, 2009 What types of activities/events do your volunteers do with your residents? Also, when you have just one person who wants to volunteer, what do they normally do? Thanks for any help/ideas!
heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted March 27, 2009 When we have a group of volunteers-- and little or no money--- we play bingo. We have some small snack and give away prizes instead of the usual small amount of cash. When we have a group and a nice budget-- at least $300-- we throw a party complete with dancing! One group comes every year and spends about $2000-- we play bingo and have a catered bbq dinner. (This will serve about 150 people with lots of $25 gift cards for prizes.) It also depends on the age of the volunteers-- Those I listed above were for high school and adults. If we have middle school (and supervision) then we do game days, carnivals, American Idol, Talent Shows, Wii bowling tournaments, crafts etc. When one person comes to volunteer-- I usually put them as a computer teacher to give individual lessons-- there is just not enough of me to go around and this is the area that the seniors want most. We also have individual volunteers teach a class or lead a group (whatever they want to do or are good at), scrapbook our photo album, assist with bingo on regular bingo nights, the same with birthday party nights, or any other special occasion. It is all about knowing what you need or would like to have-- and matching someone with their talents and time. Hope this helps.
sposu08 0 Report Share Posted April 13, 2009 We have 3 people from within our community that come in and volunteer. The big activity that they help out with is Bingo. We have Bingo 2-3 times a week because that is the activity that our residents like the most. The volunteers will come in and help people that have vision or hearing trouble and one of the volunteers calls Bingo for us. They also come in and visit with the residents a couple times a week. They go around and will read to the residents (books, newspapers, etc.) and just converse and reminisce with them. They have also came in and helped when we have had holiday parties for the residents and family members. Recently we had two volunteers come in and help with the community Easter egg hunt. They helped hide the eggs and helped out with refreshments. The easiest thing that they can do if there is just one person that comes in to volunteer is to go around and talk or read to them. Our residents love that. Plus they love the outside interaction with other people than just the people that work here at the facility. Best of Luck, Stephanie
jwilliams 0 Report Share Posted April 13, 2009 We are in the process of starting a volunteer program. We have volunteers who come in and have a weekly music program for the residents. There are other volunteers who call BINGO and just have one to one visits.
WrenHenry 0 Report Share Posted April 15, 2009 My volunteers cut out " funny money" for Residents to be paid--for attending activities. Volunteers play Brain Aerobics with Residents, do gardening, help out with socials, do religious programs, some perform, help out with auctions, bingo, special events!! I have no staff and without them helping with decorating, going on outings--I would be lost.......WrenHenry
janicez 0 Report Share Posted April 21, 2009 In our community we have two new volunteers and they always come up with new activities and ideas, that really arouse the interest of our residents. The last weekend they invited family members of our residents and cooked with them for their family. It was a great pleasure to see, that everyone was having a lot of fun, and above all it is very wonderful to see, that such young people like my two new volunteers, with such wonderful hearts, caring and loving, still exist in our society. It is a very rare phenomenon. Hardly ever happening. And I could not be prouder.
Cale 0 Report Share Posted April 22, 2009 I usually have the volunteer to walk around with a room visit cart and travel around the hallway 5 times to see if any residents- wanting any material from books, magazine etc. Chat with residents in hallway to encourage them to come to Activity room. :
