leares27 0 Report Share Posted November 10, 2008 Hello my name is Estelle and I am a college junior. I am a Social Work Major. I want to help people, but I am not sure that Social Work is what I want to do. I am going to get the degree because having a college degree is an important career stepping stone. It was suggested to me to think about being an activities director because then I get to work with people and have fun doing it. I was wondering how people who are currently directors chose to be directors? Iwas also wondering what education/certification I would need to be one and if there is adegree associated with this field how long does it take? Sincerely, Stell Leary
heavenstar 0 Report Share Posted November 10, 2008 Stell, I understand what you are saying. I have a degree in Psychology and sociology so I also knew I wanted to work with people. I had bigger plans about going to grad school, but life got in the way and I ended up working after graduation. I worked with juvenile delinquent boys who were mostly sex offenders and I HATED it so much! I found a job in the paper looking for someone to run programs and volunteers for seniors. After I got the job, I knew I found my niche in life. This job fits me to a T and is perfect for me. There are lots of different types of degrees you can get--- like Theraputic Recreation, gerontology, etc. It is always a good idea to volunteer somewhere. Volunteer a few times a week at different places--a nursing home or assisted living. Volunteer with a social worker at another place, then do something else. You will get a hands on view of what it takes and what you like. Hello my name is Estelle and I am a college junior. I am a Social Work Major. lindsaymarie 0 Report Share Posted December 4, 2008 Stell, You can find everything you need to know about certification and degrees here: http://nccap.org/ Specifically, here is a breakdown of what your level of certification would be after NCCAP certification and college education: http://nccap.org/certification/levels/index.shtml I got into the activities profession after many, many years of caring for elderly people in private and institutional settings. I actually had my first experience as an activities volunteer when I was twelve years old. Like you, the general desire to help people has always been with me. I stumbled into eldercare early on and fell in love with this population, so I've stuck around. Right now I am pursuing an English degree (I am also a junior) as well as NCCAP certification, without any set goals in mind. I took a long break from education after high school and spent a lot of time agonizing over academics and career choices. Now I know that it is important simply to have a degree first and foremost, and I've chosen a subject that I have always loved to make that road as pleasant as possible. I wish you luck and happiness!
