Guest greenduckmoma Report Share Posted September 20, 2006 Hi I am a guest here but I do assist the activity department in a small LTC facilityand I have had residents , volunteers and staff really complain about the AD being so negative and the more that I work with the activities deaprtment I really see what they are talking about and it is true. I know that she has some hurdles ie.. budget , van etc... but she never thinks these people want to do anything and never wants to try anything that anyone suggest , and even says that they will help with ... her negativity and the attitude that people have toward her because of it ... makes her job so much harder than it should be , and she is running off volunteers, and residents slack off greatly from coming to anything. I read here where alot of you get your residents to help on things such as the bulletin board ... not here ... I just cant understand how she could be so negative, and she will say that she is not creative or no I no one will come.. and she doesnt even ask them (and I know all the residents quite well.. she says this to even the resident suggestions.) I am just wandering if you all have ever encountered anyone like this... I know that the activities department could be so much better if the staff had a better attitude toward her, and she does have paid assistants so why would you run off your volunteers? Just curious? greenduckmoma ( I with held name in case she reads these boards I am not trying to hurt anyones feelings just trying to understand or something ? If you would like to email me seperate

ActPro7 0 Report Share Posted September 21, 2006 This sounds like someone who is burned out or has lost sight of what this business is all about. I was lucky--three years ago I got into this business and was blessed to have an assistant that had been an AD for 20 odd years. I had never worked as an activity director---I learned alot from this AD. I am now considered one of the best in my area---and it is because of her. She encouraged me, showed me the tricks of the trade, motivated me to research, network, learn my craft. No matter how tired I got, she continued to share new and old ideas/ 8-) information. Hang in there---if this person is this negative----how has this damaged the activity program there? Maybe it is time to speak to someone about her-----this may bring about problems. Good luck. Guest greenduckmoma Report Share Posted September 22, 2006 Hi yes this is really having a bad effect on the activity program ... she has only been doing this a couple of years .. it is just like she doesnt want to try or to put forth the effort to do anything..... it is really sad cause there are so many great things that the residents could do and enjoy so much ... I just dont understand why you would go to work everyday, in something that you dont put have that much interest in doing ( esp. a job like activities )... I feel for the residents greenduckmoma
MICKI 0 Report Share Posted October 20, 2006 HELLO GREEN, IS THERE A REASON WHY YOU FEEL THIS WAY? HAVE YOU TALKED TO THIS PERSON ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS? INSTEAD OF DOWNING THIS PERSON MAYBE TRY TO HELP HER.
Guest Guest_Banana Report Share Posted October 20, 2006 Micki - I think you missed her point. She wasn't downing the AD, she was trying to grasp an understanding of how a key person who is hired to enrich other's lives can be so negative and see if there are others with her same experience. I think she even was trying to get tips on how to better deal with the situation. Sometimes talking to a person before getting a clear understaing may create more problems than anticipated. She is trying to educate herself.
Guest Guest Report Share Posted October 22, 2006 I feel for you! I myself have to deal with this regularly. I am an AD on one side of the building, she is an AD on the other. I avoid her as much as possible because I feel that if the residents want it, they should get it. She treats the fully functional ones as children, talks down to them and hands them coloring pages and crayons. She has many complaints against her. I have created an everchanging program on my end, added gardening, a dog, cooking yadda, yadda. She was totally against me changing anything, adding anything. I even run fundraisers on my end. She refuses to do anything new until the administrator pulls her into his office. She even insults people on a regular basis. What really stinks, I have to do part of her work because she cannot/will not run a computer. Then she waits till the last minute to give it to me and wants is within the next day or two- even if it is the weekend. I had to correct her about it last month then went and "told on myself" to the administrator. He laughed because he agreed with me about not doing work on days off, especially hers... She is on a really tight reign right now, she hasn't made the changes necessary by the facility standards. Not looking to good for her right now. :hammer:
candwj 0 Report Share Posted October 26, 2006 Hello I'm new here. I just wanted to say,WOW! I am having a similar problem with my AD. She has been working at the facility (LTC) for 18 years and that is all I ever hear. I began working at this facility over a year and a half ago and I have never seen her initiate an activity on her on. When I first started, there were never any activities done. I have tried every thing I know to do to try and help her. Our adm. divided up the work, I do the groups and she does in-room. I have one hall to document on and she has the other. But I always end up having to write her careplans and usually her notes. She never does the in rooms and it really bothers me that the residents are suffering for it. I try to encourage her but it only makes things worse. Any advice?
