I again trying to find where is a good place to get certified for AD in Indiana. I have a BS in Education and an Associate in a Business Area and have taken several medical types of classes. I keep seeing ads for ADs in my county - and AD assistants - but I have no idea where they are getting training in my state. I think this job is right up my alley. I know many nurses are transitioning to this career and some social workers are in this career. The correspondance courses I have checked are quite expensive - especially considering how much I have already spent on my education (please no lectures on how education costs money and I should be willing to pay for more of it). I currently work 2 low paying jobs so I can't afford much time or money on more education (jobs in my county are low pay and scarce). So far I have been told to just volunteer or get a CNA job instead. I am thinking there might be some new information out there in my state that I am not aware of.

You can find other MEPAP Instructors by going to www.nccap.org and click on the "MEPAP Course Instructor Listing" then click on the state that you are looking for. Also remember that there are instructors in other states and they may travel to yours if you can provide enough students and a place to have it.

I worked in Indiana as a recreational therapist. I know that many rec therapists work in long term care as "activity" staff. Indiana University has an excellent program in therapeutic recreation, although I realize you don't want to go back to school. They also have a distance learning program where you can get your master's degree and never have to go to Bloomington. You might look into RTI, the Recreation Therapists of Indiana. They're really active and frequently have job openings.

Do you have a web address for this master program? I bet it is expensive and does require classes in Bloomington - which I do not live near.

You have to pay money to the RTI site to access any info! That is ridiculous. I cannot find any info from IU on an online RT program. Indiana is cutting way back on educational programs due to the poverty in our state - might be that the program doesn't even exist.

I am taking Mark Laker's certification class in Indianapolis at this time. He is wonderful and has been teaching the class for many years. He has a website where you can reach him. I believe it is www.activitydirectorcourse.com. I am sure he can help you, or at least answer your questions.

Hello, Hoosier! I have had several assistants take the Mark Laker/John Rowlett VHS course & althought it's not like having a live instructor, it is good. They are coming out with a new DVD course which I think is now available. Also, there is an Indiana Activity Director's Course in Indy coming up soon & a course at Ivy Tech in Evansville starting the beginning of March. E-mail me if you want more info. kdghouse@aol.com

I took Mark's course and loved it! They held it in Indy at a hotel. They are very professional and offer lots of advice and help. They even offered help after the class.
