I ask that all Activity Professionals find some way in thier hearts to give something to the victims of Katrina either personally or making it a service project for our residents! GOD BLESS AMERICA! Guest Jen Report Share Posted September 3, 2005 Miguel, It has been obbious by the news reports that, like always, the elderly and children are the most vulnerable. My husband and I are headed to Jackson, Ms. late next week to work in a shelter sponsored by our denomination. Our vacations happened to be good timeing. According to a pastor I was talking to today, gas is becoming very difficult to get as far north as Memphis. I am urging my residents to turn off the news. It's devistating to them. Having them do a service project is a great idea. God bless everyone involved, the elderly, the healthcare workers, and the victims. Keep praying! Diana 0 Report Share Posted September 10, 2005 No, we didn't do a drive - in San Antonio we have an abundance of donation stations and churches to help. Our facilities are quickly filling up with nursing home patients from New Orleans (one facility took in almost 30 new residents). We only have two so far and both are very high functioning - the one gentleman has no family and left his electric wheelchair at the SuperDome. don't know how we'll find him a new one - it's too early to tell. Facilities who are accepting large amounts of residents are basically triaging them into the facility and worrying about payment later. But most of these folks were healthy before the hurricane and most aren't even elderly! These folks never even made it to hospitals before they came to the nursing facilities. All department heads and facility physician were there to receive residents by the busload and sending those who were too sick to the hospitals. On our end, donation stations were out of the question - actual care to evacuees has been number one priority. We are in daily contact with organizations for bed availability for further admissions. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted September 10, 2005 Hey Diana, I'm in Houston but I don't currently work at a facility, but I was surprised that all my new students all said that they had victims of the hurricane moving in. But only the Nursing Facilities, I figure that the Assisted Living were not getting people from this disaster! So I think it would be a good philantrophic activity to get a can drive going for those states not affected by the disaster! Just a thought! hcornell 0 Report Share Posted September 11, 2005 This past Friday, my nursing home sponsored a "Kartrina Disaster Relief Family Day" We had many events such as... 1. dress down day. It cost $2 to be out of uniform. 2. A 50/50 split raffle. We had already planned fun events for the residents such as hay rides, glamour shots, family portraits by a professional photographer, and a folk singer. Many of the families attending the day contributed to the relief fund. Our administrator actually won the 50/50 and donated the money back to the fund. I was thinking of getting some fleece and ribbon for edging and having my residents make baby blankets to send. The ones who can't sew could help cut material, ribbon, etc. That would also tie into this being national sewing month! We are in Colorado so there's not much I can do from here as far as taking in residents but i really want to help. Yandz66 0 Report Share Posted September 12, 2005 Hi I'm from Rsvl, Ca and we are holding fund raisers from now 'till the first week of Oct. We are selling hot dogs, sundaes, popcorn and whatever I could think of to send the money to the Red Cross. I can only do two fund raisers a week because my time is limited but Staff is really responding to this well. Pennie 26 Report Share Posted September 23, 2005 Hi All, well we live in Livingston, TX and trying to prepare for Rita. It is such a mess and not even here yet! Most of you, I'm sure have heard about the residents in Lousiana nursing home that died. The husband & wife who are up on charges for their deaths. Then this morning (Sept. 23) that bus that caught fire off of I-45. 43 residents were on it from a retirement center and 20 died on the bus in the explosion/fire. My heart goes out to those resident, family & staff. They had on the news that at Baytown nursing home had 14 critcal care residents & no way to get them out. Well a ambulance company saw this & sent several ambulance to get these res. You think people are not as nice & caring as they use to be in the old days but this mess here in Houston has shown that people are just as caring & good now as they were in the good ole days Well I have to get back to work before Rita gets here. JeannettaTHE 0 Report Share Posted September 23, 2005 I'm in Hillsboro Texas, 60 miles north of Dallas. I heard about the wreck before leaving home this morning, it is so tradgic. Our local hospital is across our driveway, they have taken in about 30 patients from the evacuation. There was also a family who ran without gas and began walking, the father passed out from a ery serious heat stroke and is in our ICU. My hearts go out to everyone including you. May GOD bless you, your family, and residents. Keep the lord in your heart and he will see you through this. Be careful and keep us informed !! Guest Tinki Report Share Posted September 25, 2005 The activity director at Brighton Gardens in Belaire was one of my students and I have been sick worring about her, I was not sure if she had gotten on the bus. But I want to share with activity director community that she is fine, but sicked with grief. Please pray for her and the families who lost thier loved ones so suddenly.
