phxville 0 Report Share Posted August 4, 2005 I am one of the "others" so I thought I would specify a little for research sake. I have my bachelors in counseling and as of now I am not certified. I am considering it but my ED is dragging her feet a little bit because I think she wants me to get my Administrator's license. Guest Searcher Report Share Posted August 23, 2005 This is an interesting pole, i read recently that recreational therapists were taking over the AD feild, is this actually coming true? Its hard to tell with only 25 votes though.
Guest Starlife Report Share Posted August 24, 2005 I am a CTRS and have been in LTC for over 20 years. Its great to see other Recreational Therapists finding a career in LTC. It has been good to me! I am not a member, so did not vote, but thought I'd give input anyway.

Guest Tinki Report Share Posted September 7, 2005 I believe the reason TR end up in this field is because it is so closely related and already have access to the field. I think that other people end up as AD's because they happen upon it, or were in other jobs in the LTC field, like CNA or CMA, etc... TR and I believe social workers are already qualified to work as AD's in LTC and everyone else has to take courses to become qualified. Many TR's have been working in LTC for over 30 years, I myself know many. It is not a new concept that TR professionals are working in LTC. One reason why adminstrators like to have a TR professionals on staff, is they don't have to spend money and time on getting the employee the apporpriate courses. It makes sense that more TR people are ending up in this field. I am not saying one is better than the other, because a good AD has a certain personality and posesses leadership skills, etc. Those people could be TR's or a person waiting tables at Bennigan's. I think the type of people that get a degree in TR are usually those types of personalities mentioned above so they fit the mold. I am TR and after graduation I did not know where to look for a job, I found 2 or 3 AD positions and that is were I got my first job. I loved it! I don't look at it as a take over, just qualified people trying to make a difference in the lives of seniors.

Amber_DJ 0 Report Share Posted September 15, 2005 What is the purpose of this vote..Does it matter how much education you need to have..I'm not saying I don't but, is it required for the resident's to know how much education you have..What happened to being there for the residents and not so much on how much education you are to have.I thought it was all about them anyways. Guest Tinki Report Share Posted September 19, 2005 I think this poll is for interest sake, no one is saying that you have to have more education to be a better Activity Director. This is not my poll but, I have been interested in it because, I like to know what kind of people are out there doing this job! I will say that learning new ideas and techiques can only help you as an Activity Director, as well as, bring quality of care to your residents! The more knowledge you obtain about AD, geratrics, leadership techiques, etc, the better AD you will be as a Activity Professional! The more networking and continuing education workshops you attend only help bring new ideas to help satisfy your residents!
Guest Tinki Report Share Posted November 30, 2005 Please don't forget to vote, I want to submit this statistical poll into the Activity Director's Quarterly! Karen
Mance 0 Report Share Posted December 2, 2005 Hi, it was showing that I already voted and I didn't get to see the poll. Anyhow my education is that I am a high school grad, i've been in managment, live in babysitter, worked in day care with children and have a neice and 2 nephew's that I get weekly. I'm not sure if that's what you were wanting to know but that's my experience.

Guest turtle Report Share Posted February 3, 2006 I was also a school teacher for five years. I taught in a private school in classes with up to five different age groups in them. Talk about being able to work with a variety of skill levels at one time. I was influenced to try the activity profession by a former student's parent who was HR for our facility at a time when I was looking for a little more challenge. The transistion seemed natural to me. I enjoy my residents more than I did my students. I am currently working towards my certification.
