Transitional Care Unit

Recommended Posts

We are opening a transitional care unit in our nursing home and we are hoping to provide these short-term people with a traveling 1:1 cart -- magazines, tape recorders/CD players and CDs, etc. We are looking for FABULOUS ideas of what else to put on this cart. We use a 1:1 cart in our memory care unit, but many of those items (buttons to sort, etc.) would not be of interest to the short-term people. ANY ideas would be MOST appreciated! Thanks for your help!

I worked in a TCU for several years and can tell you that unless the activity includes food, entertainment and their family & friends are invited they are not coming out of their rooms!

LOTS of crossword/word search, etc. I used a Large print book, cut or pulled it apart and copied the pages front & back. Some days I handed out a trivia sheet to fill out and they had to come to the Nurses station for the answers. (again I copied pages out of Trivia books. A rolling book cart with a variety of types of books, "Talking Storybooks"(you can get them free from the Library for the Blind or your local library, Library for Blind furnishes tape players free, Dollar Store has head phones for $1), Beads to string for jewelery, jigsaw puzzles with a table to work them on 300-500 pieces work best), Musical tapes & player, TV/VCR & movies, rolling computer that can go room to room. A small fish tank that you can leave in the room with colorful fish to watch. Markers, water colors, paper, brushes, charcoal or pastels. Pen & paper to write letters. Knitting needles, chrochet hooks and yarn (from Good will, etc.)

I had a Boy Scout troop make the wooden games (Tic Tac Toe, the triangel with holes and you have to move the pegs until only one left) the men seamed to really like them.

I also asked the residents if they had a hobby that the spouse or friends could bring in from home for them to work on.

We also gave a Welcome gift of puzzle pages, lotion, tooth brush & paste, pencil, pen, and a small "Rice Bag", the volunteers made them with a note that said to put it refrigerator for a cold pack or "Micro" it for 60-90 seconds for a hot pack. These items the resident could take home with them.

Make sure you have lots of books and puzzle books. Also, adult coloring pages and crayons, markers, etc. Small crafts that they can assemble are also good to have on their.

 Look at Room Visits Cart Pitchers for my Cart Ideas.

Room to Room Socials work as well Coffee Cart this is Cup of Joe The Go, Tea Trolley, Ice Cream, Ice Cream Sandwich, Root Beer Floats, Peaches N' Cream and my own very own Mixed Drinks. So much fun and gets everyone involved. Especially wonderful on the weekends it lessens the stress on our clients as they will not have to worry about entertaining their visitors. It will also help. I include trivia and inspirational quotes. Copy sheets and cut them into strips they can be used like fortune cookie great fun for all and provides a conversation starter. Hope you and your guest have lots of fun.
