My residents have been asking for an activity like this and they are wondering if we will be able to actually serve alcohol. I have heard of facilities doing this but I am unsure of the proper policies and procedures. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. cindytexan 1 Report Share Posted January 8, 2010 I have been told by my DON that you have to have a doctor's order for each Resident that want's to participate. The Resident should have the right to have a little wine or whatever they enjoy every once in a while. We are preached too that "this is their home" all the time, but how often are your Resident's allowed to actually act like they are at home? abrandon15 0 Report Share Posted January 11, 2010 At our facility, I had an Oktoberfest for the residents, and I wanted to serve them real beer. I just went to the Nurse Practictioner, gave her a list of the residents who were participating, and she told me which ones could have it. I'm not sure if I was supposed to actually get an order written, but she just OKed it verbally with me. mmmusgrave 0 Report Share Posted January 12, 2010 With a doctor's order we can go out for alcohol at my facility. Make sure you have the order first! I went with a group and one of the women ordered a mixed drink, and we had to treat it as an incident because of one of her meds! If a family member brought in alcohol such a beer for a resident they could have alcohol (again with a doc's order). We serve "neer beer" like O'Douls for men's groups with pretzles and a card game. aaron 0 Report Share Posted January 25, 2010 If your in Assisted Living Facility you may want to ask your Executive Director if you are able to serve alcohol. I work for an assisted living facility and I know that I'am not able to do so. If you are in an Independent Living Facility I'm more than positive that you are able to. I would just check with the nurse and ask if certain residents need to watch there alcohol do to the medication that they are taking. Fablous 0 Report Share Posted January 26, 2010 Happpppy Happppy Hourrr! Yes, indead I love our non-alcholic happy hour. It makes everyone happy and smile as it is a normal part of their past to have a fun bevrage. I use this activitie combined with live music and turn it in to a holiday celebration. Sporting events are enhanced with it. I work at a SNIF and if our guest want to have real alchole to drink they with out a dought need to have a doctors order or no achole. For instance on an outting we went to Apple Bees and one of our guest tried to order an acholic beverage and felling terable I had to say we can not do that because you did not let me know in advance to be able to get a doctors note and it is illagle for me to provide a setivie of any kind. We are going to try an acholic cocktail hour with Dr. orders of course and see what comes of it. Dont be afraid to be crative and have fun with it. Don't forget the neat glasses you can use. you can make your own markers to atach to your glasses to tell the drinks apart. this can be done in craft. The more things you can tie in gives them more control over what comes together a sense of aclushment. What kinds of mixed drinks do they like vergin dacuaries on the rocks (lessions chocking hasords), bloody maries (no celery), Ticlan Sunrise with out the Teclain let them vote. shirlee 0 Report Share Posted February 4, 2010 We have a weekly Happy Hour on each unit and one monthly themed Happy Hour for the whole facility. Our residents look forward to it. It’s a time to socialize and listen to music. As per Doctors orders our residents can receive 1 alcoholic beverage a week. We serve beer, wine and brandy along with non-alcoholic beverages. We serve chips and soft popcorn for our mechanical soft residents. She told me that her facility schedules a Social Hour once each week in which residents who have a doctor's order are served alcohol if they want. jledoux 0 Report Share Posted February 8, 2010 In my facility we serve alcoholic drinks (pina coladas, daquiris, margaritas, wine and beer) during happy hour, they are adults. abidlack 0 Report Share Posted February 9, 2010 I just discussed a Happy Hour with my administrator and Social Services. I was told to give our Medical Director a list of everyone that wants to participate in the activity. He can then review their chart and write an order to allow alcohol. Our residents rights states that the residents are allowed to have alcohol, however as an employee I cannot give it to them without an order, so I would be careful. In the past I have used Non-Alcoholic beer. The residents still enjoy it and even though some makes comments about it, they are usually just joking. You might need to ask for a doctors order. But its a good idea! and if this doesnt come though you can always settle for grape juice & the welchs brand has non alcholic drink in a wine looking bottle.
