afternoon social theme ideas for fall??

Recommended Posts

We are now ending our summer social themes fo our assisted living community. I am looking for some new ideas for 2 of the days. We already have wine and cheese, and the beloved bbq social. We are trying to replace our summer themes for more fall or wintery themes. Any ideas would be very apppreciated. Thanks.Bobbie

These are some ideas I have used for my music entertainment groups:

'Harvest Festival' ~ The modern British tradition of celebrating Harvest Festival in churches began in 1843, when the Reverend Robert Hawker invited parishioners to a special thanksgiving service at his church at Morwenstow in Cornwall. Victorian hymns such as "We plough the fields and scatter", "Come ye thankful people, come" and "All things bright and beautiful" but also Dutch and German harvest hymns in translation helped popularise his idea of harvest festival and spread the annual custom of decorating churches with home-grown produce for the Harvest Festival service.

'Last of the Summer Wine' ~ reminiscence and fun, photographs, stories and songs about getting older ( When I'm 64, May to September, Autumn Leaves, Rocking Chair, Young at Heart etc )

'A Musical Journey Around the World' ~ one of the assistants made a cardboard bus with the resident's faces in the windows and we had a wall map with cords leading to songs from the programme.

'Disney World' ~ toffee apples, cotton candy, fairground music, Disney hats. Good one for a family day, maybe even even hire a carousel.

'HoeDown' ~ denim and chequered scarves, straw hat crafts, blindfold pie tasting, cow-pat tossing, bluegrass music.

'Winter Wonderland' ~ narrate story about being snowed up, sing Christmas songs, wear scarves and hats and serve hot chocolate with marshmallows.

'Casino' ~ one place hired slot machines and a croupier, music was nightclub standards, 'waiter' took round trays of little drinks and appetisers.

'Rosh Hashannah' Jewish New Year ~ the history, Hava Nagila clapping song ( gets faster and faster ) eat apple slices dipped in honey and wish each other 'sweet and happy new year', everybody stirs the honey cake mix and makes a resolution.

'Chilli Cookout' ~ cornbread competition, country music.

'Divali' the Hindu festival of lights, a local temple might come visit with their beautiful clothes & maybe play sitar, and you can use non-flame candles or the residents could create cardboard star lanterns and put decorative electric lights behind, or hang clear light strands.

'Classic Cars' ~ here in Houston several vintage vehicle organisations bring their vehicles for the residents to see and sit in, I play 20 s music.

'Winter Games' / 'Winter Olympics' ~ foam snowballs, themed bean bags, timed contests for 'dress the angel', 'santa ski slope' with action figures ( good if kids are coming ), 'extreme egg-nog'...

the ideas are endless really! Email me if you'd like any more or any music ideas mail@tracypace.com

And check your local tourist org for the local festivals for trips, and use their themes, maybe their posters and advertising materials. Some of them may send out their people to do enactments or talks.

We have "Winter Warm-up" on the activity calendar. Great weekend activity for a volunteer and or your staff to conduct. Hot Chocolate, variety of cookies, sometimes muffins, you can put on some nice relaxation music, intruments, songs without words. It is a very nice afternoon activity for just a nice small group that like to sit in the living room, activity room to relax.

For our group they love sports - Football sports theme works great with the autumn decor and party foods / snacks.

Apples are at there best soon enjoy the flavor of apples and what we make with them.

Hi!

How about buying one of those boxes full of specialty teas and having a tea social. There's something about a nice hot cup of tea that says "autumn" to me.

We do this once in a while at my CCRC and the ladies and gents socialize and we have music playing in the background. The residents love it. Don't forget the cookies:)

We had an afternoon of cookies and cider. We made iced apple cookies the day before in cooking group and i bought a gallon of apple cider. we heated it up and added mulling spices in a large coffee urn. the aroma of the spices filled the entire building and everyone came to see what was brewing. they loved the warm cider and cookies on a rainy day. We sat and reminisced about picking apples and their many uses.

Thanks for the idea of using a coffee urn. I am planning a similiar event for later in the month and I was considering using a crock pot. This is a more appropriate idea. Thanks

We have found that in the fall our residents really enjoy baking holiday treats and siting around a fire place sipping coaco and reading books together that is when our Camp Fire book club really kicks into gear.

These are all great ideas for the winter time. I have a Christmas CD and it has a fireplace CD with it. I am going to do the apple cider and tea cookies with the above CD's. Thanks for a new activity
