Men outings

Recommended Posts

During our resident council meeting, some of the male residents suggested that we go to a strip bar for the annual men outing in June. I was shocked! Is that appropiate? I have heard of other activity directors taking their residents to Hooter's but at least they have some clothes on. What will be an appropiate outing for a female activity director to take senior males?

How about a baseball game or somewhere where there are slot machines or horse racing. Not sure where you live but maybe out to eat crabs or out fishing. Just to name a few. I would definately not feel comfortable with the strip club outing.

Whilst I feel people should be self-determining as long as possible, I'd have 2 objections to this:

1. it's not the professional's role to facilitate people's sexual outlets; indeed it could seriously cross professional boundaries to participate in a sexualised activity with a resident

2. it's open to misinterpretation by other professionals, families, media etc.

I think if someone's family member or friend were to go with them on such an outing it's one thing, but it crosses too many boundaries for me, I wouldn't do it.

Shows that you're really engaging the residents in decision-making though!

Sport outings like baseball, basketball, bowling, horseshoe tournaments, fairs, festivals, a sports bar might be appropriate depending on your residents and abilities. Men like to go fishing, you could take a lunch and some near beer. Strip clubs are not appropriate for professionals. If a resident is insistant, the family could take them if they wanted. Hope this helps.

Men seem to enjoy sports. Ask the men to provide you some examples with sports they enjoy. Ask them how they would like to participate: as spectator, meeting a team player, etc. When you decide the event make a flyer: for example baseball, use baseball stationary; decorate their room with a banner about the event, sing take me out to the ball game before the event to get them excited w/ peanuts and cracker jacks, have a plastic bat, ball and mit, make some bases for them to walk around or push their wheelchair around, let them hit and catch. Ask them what they liked about baseball, what was their favorite food: hot dogs, cotton candy, etc.. provide that for them at the game. This could be a little league game that only last an hour on a Saturday afternoon. Get them engaged in what they like!

I don't think it's appropriate for anyone to take the residents to a strip club. I think it should be up to a family member or friend to make the decision to take them there.

I agree with most that a strip club is not ok. See if anyone in your area is having a poker tournment that you could take men to or host a poker tournament at the facility.

I don't think it is a good idea to take residents out to a strip joint. There are enough residents speaking, touching and looking at you in appropriate ways as it is. It will just give them a license to start if they haven't already or the go-ahead to continue. Places like Hooter's will just add to the problem as well.

Being a male Activity Director, I wanted to run away from this when I saw it!!!!!!!

1) How much liability would it be to take a senior with health issues??? Think heart attack by overstimulated eyeballs.

2) Think Long Island Iced Teas + Lortab + Dulcolax + Strip Club Buffett = Nothing good whatso evah!

3) Do you really want ( or would your administrator want?!?!) The wheelchair van wit hthe company logo pulling up to the club????

4) Finally, didn't read what time of day but let's assume......lunchtime activity.....

Do you really want your A) Mother in law

:( Preacher/Priest/Spiritual Leader

c) child's kindergarden class field trip

D) Grandmother

See you load residents into a nudie bar?????

Ok, I had my fun.....

But really, some things that are brought up in Resident Council can be vetoed.....if a surveyor wants to tag you on that, so be it!

I agree with the other comments, it's not appropriate for a coordinator to take them but suggest to the men that they ask their families to take them.

I remember playing a video for my residents and there was a scene which I didn't fell comfotable with so I fast forwarded it. Thinking that there would be no discussion regarding the matter I settled back to finish viewing the movie.

Peace was not to be mine because a resident had other ideas. Pushing her chair directly infront of the television she asked why I had done such a thing and if I felt they were to young and innocent to watch that part of the movie.

Seriously, I rewound the video to the scene in question and sat back and enjoyed it with the 80 and 90 year olds watching it with me.

A movie love scene can be okay but the strip club it to much.

Oh my!lol. That would be a hard decision to make. I haven't had to deal with anything like that since I've been the Activity Director at my building, but I guess in the past they have set up private viewings of adult films for the men. I know it's not exactly the same, but maybe they can compromise. Good luck!

I definately do not think that would be a good idea. I am planning to take the male residents on a fishing outing to commerate Father's Day. How about a baseball game, besides having the local team, you should inform yourself about softball teams that play through the local parks. We have a female team called Senior Moments, ladies over 55 years, my male/female residents enjoy watching them play.

Take them to Hooters, have one of the guys from the staff take them, and tell them this is the closest they will get. A strip club is out of the question. What's next? A massage parlor?? Who would fault you if you refused? Administration? Corporation? The State? I don't think so.. Heck! hire a belly dancer....again, this is the closest they will get.

The first thing I would do is to speak with your administrator about their position concerning the mens request. I think you should try to encourage the men to plan their outing to a place similar to Hooters if that is the type of entertainment that they are interested in. If they continue to request an outing to a strip bar explain to them that you do not feel comfortable hosting this outing and if they wish to move forward with the planning of the trip they will need to find a male to accompany them. If you allow the men to make the trip to the strip bar it is important that they have appropriate behaviors with the women in the facility (residents and staff) after their return.

I don't think a strip club outing would look good for you or the facility. Maybe try forming a bowling league

and take them to the local bowling ring on bowlers night.

One of my friends at another community solved this issue by having a belly dancer come in to a luncheon for the men. Some of the women even watched from the back of the room. She told the guys they had to have a majority of them want it and well they did. They have not asked for strip clubs since then and told her that they enjoyed it. Their was no nudity and I didnt see it as any differet from hooters.

I would conclude that you must run excellant programs for your residents, in order for them to feel comfortable to recommend this type of outting.

I personally believe that attending a strip bar/club would be an individual choice and not approperiate to offer all residents. When planning activities, always take into consideration that a program is interesting to the majority of the residents and not the select few.

This type of request, should involve family support. Good Luck! :D

Out of curiosity I asked my administrator what she thought about this. She said ABSOLUTLY NOT. She said that if residents wanted to visit a strip club that is was the responsibility of the family/friend members to accomodate this request.

Her concern was about the reputation of the facility. She said that they choices that the residents made while out with their family/friends was not a reflection upon the facility.

Kinda what I expected...

Hello,

I agree with everyone. I would not take the residents to a strip bar. I have arranged for the men to go to sports venues and the local casino. Mens groups are a great excape for them as well. A good time for them to get together and talk about men issues. Our residents really enjoy the beer and banter sessions as well.

I don't think taking residents to strip bars is appropriate!!! Especially since you are female and you will have to supervise the event. That to me is pushing that fine line of freedom. I too have heard of hooters, but at least those women aren't completely naked. I couldn't tell you the "verbage" to use when expalining this to your male residents, but that isn't an appropriate place for you to take them due to the fact that you are female. Good luck with that!
