I would like to know if anyone in a similar position has used a wii with their residents and how successful it was. What games and products were successful and which ones should I avoid? It may be difficult to have some of them comprehend something so new and foreign to them, but there are a few that with simple instructions, are able to manipulate the remote and just focus on the screen. The #1 game to this date is bowling. For Men's Club, they enjoy boxing. There are also other games such as Wii Music where they can move the remote as if they were conducting a choir (this may work well with dementia); Carnival Games might bring back memories of when they were younger... I hope this helps! Yes , the Wii program or as we call here at our ReHab facilty "Wii-Hab" , has done nothing but Good for our patients. From upper body strength building to mental strength building to occupying patients with anxiety and depression , it's all been a good thing , nothing negative to say about the Wii yet and I hope there's not because we love it here ! We bowl alot on the Wii most of our dementia residents we push up to play and have them put there arm on ours to play so they feel like they are still doing with the rest. jecoster 0 Report Share Posted January 8, 2009 I've never seen any place that had Wiis on sale- ours was $245.99 plus tx. A few months ago, when we got ours, Nintendo was only selling them bundles with two other Nintendo products to prevent people for scooping them up and re-selling on ebay for $600. But you could benefit from an extra remote (a Wii-mote!) and a Nunchuck, which you need for boxing and some other. The software that comes with it has several sports on it (baseball, boxing, tennis, golf, and bowling) which are all good starter games. We have Deca Sports also which has some of the same games but a few others also. As an FYI, Blockbuster (maybe other places too) rent Wii games so it's a great way to try out new software before you buy ones that you think you'll use alot. We also have the little fake baseball bat, golf club, and tennis racket that you attach to the Wii-mote which seems to make it easier to get into the games. Make sure you are familiar with all of the games before you try with patients/residents. I even had a few times set up on different shifts for staff to try (many and never played before) to get them into it too. It's really a blast! It might be fun to set up teams (different floors or hallways competing). We aren't set up to do that but it might be fun to try. drumspirit 0 Report Share Posted January 8, 2009 keep in mind there is a pacemaker warning on the wii website. those with pacemakers should not have the remote 9 inches next to their heart! is family fued a wii game? that sounds like a good bet for a popular program. bluesnowwhite 0 Report Share Posted January 9, 2009 We tried it at our facility(we purchased 4) and they are rarely used. Our residents(even the ones without dementia) couldn't seem to get releasing the button at the right time. Our therapy dept. uses one from time to time, but those residents are a bit younger. I had read so many wonderful success stories about it. Just not effective at this time where I work. It's available to families too when they visit, and it's rarely if ever checked out. The Wii Sports is what the residents enjoy the most, as well as American Idol! The thing about the Wii game is it covers all ages, male or female. The Wii Game has been donated to us by the Jewish Foundation and I use it daily with the high functioning dementia patients. They especially love the Wii sports disc. It consist of the bowling, tennis, and baseball. Those particular games are more easier for the patients. yunakitty 2 Report Share Posted January 20, 2009 Unfortunately, I've had the same experience as bluesnowwhite. There is too much complex button play for my residents to handle. I only have very elderly residents (85+), and almost everyone is either too low of cognition to get it or too cramped up with arthritis. The baseball works because they just have to move the remote. Sadly, we usually end games in a tie of 0-0, but at least the game moves. It took me over an hour to play one game of bowling with one resident, because it was so hard for her to get the hang of releasing the button on the back. And on top of that, every time you mess it up, you have to press the A button to try again. So that confused her more! I think it's a wonderful thing, and I continue to to it twice a week in the hopes that they will get it, but so far it's pretty frustrating. THank you all for any help God Bless The best place to get a wii that I have foudn so far is Gamestop I called about 15 stores a day until I found one to begin with and then it turned out to be the cheapest, Gamestop also offers pre-owned ones to help off-set your cost.
