Im new to activityirector.net, but have been in this field for a little over a year now. Recently the position of an Activity Director has become open in my facility and i am unsure about appying for the job. I know what it takes and am very prepared for the responsibilities, but very unsure of what is in store for me once getting the position. I need soem advice on what it involves and really how much more difficult it is from bieng an assistant; the position i have now. Ive been involved and dealt with many things from care plans, and MDS- to planning the monthly calender and preparing fall festivals. I just dont know whether im skilled yet for the spot. If you have any advice or pointers i would love to hear them!!

thanks! felicity

Hi Felicity!

Have you taken your state approved activity director training course yet? That would be a great place to start if you have not done so already. Best wishes to you.

:D Hi, my name is Chrystal..I have been an Activity Director for now 2 years and going..I was an assistant Activity Director..When the other Activity Director retired..I was feeling the same as you..All I can say that I am still taking courses for Activity Director...It has alot of things for ppl to know for this position..I was worried that I wasn't cut out for this type of thing...And I still have my doubts at times...But, I try to take one day at a time and Pray that GOD would guide me and help me in ways that can make me wiser and to know what steps to take to help the ppl that I have at my facility..I have only 23 residents..I am taking my time right now that the census are low to regroup and try to do things differently..I know alot of time I don't have alot of participation..I get really discouraged and really frustrated that I cannot get anyone to do an activity..And my 1:1's are frustrating too..So, please if there is anything that I can help you with or if you need to speak to someone I will try to help you ok...E-mail is Hchrystal618@aol.com or heavenbound1971@yahoo.com Please hang in there and trust GOD that he can guide you...I DO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE GOING THROUGH..

Thanks,

Chrystal Hoyle

well first you need to go to nccap.org and find out what track you are on to get certified. if you need the mepap classes they are offered through activity directors network online. i was an assistant and am working to get my ad and i was also helping with mds, calendar etc. as the ad you will be in charge, have more meetings to attend depending on your building, the mds, calendar, care plans, charting, you will be the one that everyone goes to if they have a problem with your department, hiring and firing, planning the big events and getting them done, helping the other department heads, and the basic manager duties. talk to your administrator and see if they will help you get these classes to get your certification. hope this helps. julia
