What exactly do you mean by life stations?!?!

Have you tried sewing cards... There easy to make and cheap!

1. color a coloring picture (you or a resident)

2. you can either cut it out or leave as is...

3. you can laminate it at kinkos (about $8 per card) or you can laminate it using that clear packing tape (88cents a roll)

4. Punch holes on the edges of the laminated coloring card

5. Cut a piece of yarn long enough to go through each hole the entire card

6. tie a knot or bow on one end and the other end dip it in glue or laminated it to make it look like a needle!

It's easy to use and harmless...plus you can make it easy by spacing out the hole punches or harder by having them close together!

Life stations are stations that rekindles residents memories of their past. For example I am setting up a station that looks like a 1940's kitchen. I am also doing one for a wedding, fishing and power tools. We have this for our residents with alzheimers. We have taken different sections of our hallways for our life station. We also have one for baby dolls. It has a crib, blankets, dolls, bottles, etc.. Our wedding station has a wedding dress and a tux pinned up on the wall with a table in front of it with a guest sign in book, plastic candles, bouquet, and under the table we have a cd player that plays old wedding songs softly where the residents can sit next to it and remininsce.

I really like your wedding station idea. Sounds very original. I have something similar with a sports theme. A lot of my residents are sports nuts! I also have a pet station. I have a small indoor bird aviary, a betta fish, and a place that we have frequent pet visitations to take place (dogs, cats, and rabbits) We also have a small library near a window that overlooks a floral garden for the residents to read and relax.

Hi LaShunda:

Give the residents art supplies - tempera paint, brushes, and paper and let them get after it. They love to paint. They don't need much guidance - just some encouragement.

Joanna

Hi the LaShunda,

that's really great! but I was selecting an atmosphere of that nature, I think I would involve my resident in the deciding making process. So that way, they can tell me what they enjoy and that way, I will get to know what they will prefer. Because you don't want to strieve and do the best you can without them and then they dislike the outcome. So that's what I will think.

Hope this will help you.

oh wow I really liked your idea about the wedding station... I have something similar i call it "Home Sweet Home" instead of life stations

but some things i do are...

* I put a block of already sand down wood and let them sand paper it down and i bought some bird houses from the dollar tree that i'm going to put out so my residents can paint

* I also use the sewing cards

*I do coupon clipping and recipe filing

* reading post cards and putting letters in envelopes opening mail

* Floral arrangements

Hi, I have several life stations in my Unit. I have an office set complete with desk/books/calculator/phone/ files etc. (2) I have a station that is caring for children ie: dresser/lots of cloths/changing table/bottles/diapers/small bassinet/rocking chair ect.. (3) Kitchen set up complete w/sink ,dishes, towels, brooms/mops and our residents help in setting dining table before meals and they help pick up after meals. (4) a makeup/hair station complete with/ hand mirrors, makeup, hats. purses, jewely ect. I have men stations as well. If we look at ourselves in what we do everyday when we get up and when were working, what do we do?, what items/things do we need or use? in our everyday life. Ask families what your residents did when they were younger, what groups did they belong to and what hobbies, ect and set up you stations to those life skills. Our goal is to give our residents purpose. We all need a purpose. It is the greatest thing to see residents utilize what you created, it will surprise you when you hand a resident a broom and just uses it like she did everyday. Have fun with your stations and be creative.

LaShunda,

Our community has a relaxation room, also called our Spa Boutique. In it we have a spa bath, low lighting, aroma therapy, foot spa bath, a variety of lotions for hand massages, and a CD with relaxing "Spa" style music that plays continuously all day. The boutiques are open 24 hours and residents are able to get spa baths or foot baths at their leisure.

We also feature a relaxation, or Snoezlen room, for our residents with Alzheimers. That room has a big fluffy couch, LOTS of pillows and blankets with different textures, tools for back, hand, head and feet massages, several relaxing CD's, a projector that displays scenic images, an ocean lamp that displays fish and ocean life on the wall and ceiling, some fiber optic string lights, hand chimes and several stuffed animals. Now, we don't use all of these at once, as that is over-stimulating and not relaxing at all. But one or 2 at a time can be very helpful in re-directing or preventing sun-downing. Bed Bath and beyond or linens and things have lots of these items and usually on sale. Aroma Therapy kits can be ordered from most senior supply companies like Nasco or SSWW.com. these sites also have LOADS of indoor games that anyone can play, regardless of the age or disability.

I hope this is helpful!

  • 1 month later...

Hi!

You might want to try one of the SENIOR SEZ games. They are great for "mixed" groups, with different levels of functioning. And the games can be made easier or harder, too. The instructions give suggested variations.

You can play the games in groups, or one-on-one. (We have played them on bus trips.)

The games are easy and fun, and really help to lift spirits. Our residents can't get enough of them.

Anyway, there are several different Senior Sez games: a Trivia Game, a Categories Game, and a game with Popular Sayings.

You can find out more about these games at www.seniorsez.com.

Hope this is helpful! :P

P.S. You don't need tables, paper, or pens to play the Senior Sez games. They come with wrist bands that are used for keeping score.
