1. I've put together a variety of mix discs and switch them up a bit. I use a lot of Motown because that gets everyone really moving. I have a mix of international music that people seem to really like and then there are a couple of hodgepodge ones that have everything from Joni Mitchell to the Chieftains. The seasonal ones are fun to make, too.

2. We've used light and lively and there's this other one, I don't know what it's called, but a lot of people want me to throw it out because it is so obnoxious. There are a couple of residents, though, who are really attached to it and it's hard to get this one group to switch it up sometimes when nobody is leading. The exercises are pretty good on it, but it's a guy playing a piano and making up new words to some of the old classics so it's all about exercise (instead of "I'm forever blowing bubbles" he sings stuff like "I'm forever stretching muscles" it's quite bad, actually).

We also use a lot of Motown during our exercise programs. It seems to be their favorite. We don't really use a particular tape or program. We have a wonderful assistant who makes up her own exercise programs each week. As long as we give them something to do with their hands, such as light weights, streamers to wave or musical instruments to play, and play great music, everyone has a great time exercising.

We also use CD's with mixes I have downloaded from the internet, mostly oldies. Some of them like music and some don't. It sometimes seems to distract some of them. We also use light handweights that we found at The Dollar Tree for two for a dollar. They are made out of some kind of stretchy material that can be held in your hand or placed around your wrist. They really like these. What other things do you use for props for exercise group? Our therapy department takes care of our exercise group once a week and we do it the rest of the time. We are doing exercise group 3 times a week right now. This month I started doing a short "Let's get moving" segment (about 15 minutes) on one of the days and playing Jingo afterwards because there are some that do not like exercise, but we never seem to have enough time to do the exercises. We have had to go from the morning coffee social directly to Jingo because of time constraints. How often do you do exercise group?

We use paper plates sometimes for light resistance and everybody likes the choreographed feel to it. If you've ever had a chance to watch any of the "Chair Dancing" exercise video series they have some great examples how to incorporate plates into the exercise program.

We do not use any music because I am certified as an elderly fitness instructor in addition to being a therapeutic recreation director and I want the residents to hear the instructions of each specific exercise. We run exercise 5 days a week, M-F, and we only work with the residents who were OK'd and/or referred to us thru physical therapy. Typically, they are referred to us after they finish the PT training series ,however long it may last, as a way of keeping active and improving their range of motion, balance etc.

One thing I do is collectively ,as a group, we think of one seasonal exercise. We are using "watering the flowers" as our current spring exercise. We switched from "making snow angels" in our chairs for winter and before that it was "raking leaves" for fall.

I have often seen some of my exercise patrons exercising in the halls by themselves on the weekends untill we meet again on Monday. In particular, my retired military men, who like the familiarity of routine exercise and would feel silly if I turned on music. One of the men is my official "counter" who helps me count down the repititions. All of our exercises are seated and we are not allowed to use weights at my facility unless it is thru the PT department.
